Today is Moon day!

48 years ago today life on Earth made a visit, for the first time, to another world. On July 20 , 1969 , Neil Armstrong made a small step for a man upon the lunar surface. The last such momentous event in the history of life was 240 million years ago when animals emerged from the sea to walk upon land. Unlike that ancient walk after this giant leap mankind meekly went back to Earth to concentrate instead on other ways of redistributing income.

It's a lot of money to spend with a long time before you see any return (with the exception of technological spin-offs). Life , after spending billions of years to get to this point , can afford to wait a bit longer. As for me I'm in much more of a hurry to see a follow up of this historic achievement by seeing mankind return to the moon and staying there.

I am 63, so I know now that it will not happen in my lifetime, but when I was 15, watching that first step on the moon while sitting in the living room at noontime (it was in Japan) just as the landlord came for an invited lunch, I knew then that we belonged there, and would certainly be building outposts if not colonies there by the time I was, well, 63. It is one of my greatest disappointments in my country that it is not so, but if it took 100 years from Columbus to Roanoke, maybe it will take 100 years from Apollo XI to the inhabited moon base.

It saved Teddy K’s a$$, as Mary Jo was below the fold on all the newspapers.

I fixed your historical misrepresentation. Yes, I understand that the way you stated it is the revisionist version that comports with modern PC acceptabilities, but it is historically inaccurate.

I’m with you. The ftuure seemed so bright in those days, and it seemed there was nothing America couldn’t do.

Then Liberalism happened ...

made a small step for a man...

It's what he meant to say but his line got messed up. Some claim the recording shows he actually got it right but it went down into history with the misquote. In either case you'll note I did not make it a "quote" but a quip instead.

Yes, I have heard all the stories about how he supposedly messed up, but I had the recording back in the day and have listened to subsequent recordings. But yes, I did note that you did not put the remark in quotes. That was heads-up on your part. :)

Some, including Armstrong, blamed the VOX circuit on his radio with cutting off the word, but listening to the original transmission, he says:

"That's one small step for man, one"

Then he hesitates, and you can just imagine him think to himself "did I just screw up the one line I've been practicing in front of the mirror for the last five years?

Then he quickly finishes:

"giant leap for mankind."

...when I was 15, watching that first step on the moon...

I was 9. I was convinced that by 2001 , like the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", mankind would be living and working upon the moon. What a disappointment! 2001 is now remembered for savage attacks from evil throwbacks from the dark ages who should have died out in the 7th century. Mad Moe's Mafia made an awful comeback that year and continues to hog the spotlight of history when we could have been reaching for the stars!
