Viking Skeleton’s DNA Test Proves Historians Wrong
New York Post ^ | September 8, 2017 | Natalie O'Neill

The remains of a powerful viking — long thought to be a man — was in fact a real-life Xena Warrior Princess, a study released Friday reveals.

The lady war boss was buried in the mid-10th century along with deadly weapons and two horses, leading archaeologists and historians to assume she was a man, according to the findings, published in in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Wrong.

“It’s actually a woman, somewhere over the age of 30 and fairly tall, too, measuring around [5’6″] tall ,” archaeologist Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson of Uppsala University, who conducted the study, told The Local.

It’s hilarious, isn’t it? “You’ve been warned about skulking around the sh—ting log. People are starting to talk.”

I don't know. It had just arrived in the mail. The dogs disappeared into the brush and evidently harassed the mother bear and her cubs. When the mother chased the dogs, they ran to hide behind my wife. (Yes!) She had the newly arrived book in her hand and threw it at the mother bear--hit her in the nose--and reversed her charge--she ran away, back to her cubs--but not before she managed to claw the dogs rather badly.

I tell you, there's nothing fiercer than an angry woman. Need I give examples???

Anthropologist Margaret Meade (not always the most reliable judge of anything) famously said that women should not be allowed in combat because they are too fierce.

Frankly, I think Margaret was a bit carried away when she said that. I think men and women are about equally fierce--and intelligent--and loving--and kind--and heroic--and virtuous--etc. etc. etc.--and I think the balance of advantages and disadvantages of both genders about equals out.

Ah--she took care of the dogs too. Patched 'em up. They were as good as new. She should have kicked them off the cliff for leading the bear to her and hiding behind her. But no. She patched 'em up and laughed it off.

(Worthless hounds!)

The Norse and the Celts had very different attitudes toward their women than their contemporaries to the south. To the Greeks and Romans daughters and wives were little better than chattel. Shield Maidens aren't a myth.

Maybe it was not that the horses were being burried for her but the other way around. Horses were important back then.

The Sagas whether Icelandic or Norse are mythology or lore very little true history

They are stories

Dragons and Giants and dwarf kings etc too

Women in the sagas are always pushing the men to take revenge for whatever reason on each other....that’s their main role

On the other hand we have Viking invasions of Saxon England for 100s of years and the subsequent Danelaw yet no record at all of women warrriors

Not one

And a lot of data and fairly contemporary accounting to examine

Sorry it’s just mythology appropriated by Hollywood and a lie told often enough it becomes fact

Like Confederates are Nazis

Why you tossed out Bodicea or Joan or Lady Thatcher to square the shield maiden argument is a reach

Why not toss in Catherine di Medici and Eleanor of Aquitaine and Liz I and molly pitcher and Betsy Ross too

And madame Chang Kai Shek

And Lady Tyrell, Daeneryus Targaryen and Cersei Lannister too
