Cannabis users are more likely to commit violent crime, pioneering research has shown. It warned those who smoke the drug regularly run an increased risk of using violence against others. The project is the first to demonstrate that cannabis is not only linked with violent crime but is the cause...Researchers said that cannabis causes violence and they found no evidence that the link is the other way round – ie that violent people are more likely to use cannabis...The academics said the effect of cannabis use was clear and not diminished by other factors such as patients who were heavy drinkers of alcohol.

That to me seems the most plausible explanation.
Ahhhh. The "academics." I see.
As someone who has closely associated with dozens of members of the American pot subculture for the past half-century, from Massachusetts to Florida to California and back, and who for half of that time was a daily smoker, I can report having observed cannabis having quite the opposite effect on its users.
The exceedingly rare exceptions, if they occurred (I never personally witnessed violent pot smokers), would likely be from among those predisposed to violent behavior prior to their usage of any inebriant.
IMHO.

I do remember. I remember the “this is your brain on drugs” commercial as well. I remember “just say no”.
My favorite anti-cannabis commercial though comes from Australia. It’s HILARIOUS. They pulled the ad campaign after they discovered most of their targeted audience of young viewers thought the ads were extremely funny.

The brain on drugs was pretty good. I thought the O’Connor ads were the best.
I like the meth makeovers too.
I didn’t examine the details of the study, but the British government has a history of using tortured methodology to bring out conclusions it seeks in studies about marijuana use. They have come under fire by scientists several times for studies like this that were later shown to have manipulated data to produce incredibly weak correlations and then having the UK media trumpet the suspect findings in a misleading way.
IME, criminals in general tend to be heavy drinkers and drug users.

A friend told me I needed to smoke weed to mellow out like him. 3 months later he shot his room mate with a shotgun and did lots and lots of time.

A dear friend of mine I work with suggested I look into medical marijuana because she felt like it might help me with depression & anxiety that 20+ years of prescribed meds wasn’t helping me.
My wife & I make it a point of thanking her every time we see her.
