The NFL’s Ratings Woes Finally Hit Networks’ Ad Business

Ad revenue dipped 1.2% as lower ratings more than offset higher prices

Advertising revenue from in-game NFL programming declined 1.2% to $2.42 billion during the 2017 regular season, according to Standard Media Index, as the league feels the impact of declining viewership.

SMI’s figures include NFL advertising across NBC, CBS, FOX and ESPN, from Sept. 7 to Dec. 31.

The price of 30-second spots increased 1.2% from $499,000 to $505,000, according to SMI. At the same time, the delivery of “make goods” grew from 21% to 23% of the units due to lower ratings. Media companies typically give advertisers make goods, or extra commercial space, when they don’t hit their agreed-upon audience or ratings targets.

“For the first time since we have been tracking the market we saw a slight drop of in-game dollars,” said SMI Chief Executive James Fennessy in a statement. “Despite a fairly significant fall in ratings, CPM’s were strong and demand continued to be high.”

According to SMI, NFL ad revenue was up 9.6% in 2015, and 3% in 2016.

Viewership of NFL games was down 9.7% compared with the 2016 regular season, according to Nielsen. Industry insiders have chalked up the ratings woes to a range of possible factors, from off-the-field controversies and backlash to players’ protests during the national anthem to there being too much football on TV. Many believe cord-cutting has led to a structural and long-term downshift in viewing.

Young people just aren’t as interested in professional sports, which is the driving force behind cable television.

I am convinced the NFL thinks they make up their viewer ship losses by attracting more snowflakes with their SJW crap. They obviously don’t care about conservative fans at all. I wonder how they are going to force a team to sign Kaperneck.

I’m old school. I’d rather listen to a sports broadcast on the radio than watch it on TV. Weird.

Snowflakes have neither played football nor watched it on TV at their fathers' knees. They're more likely to watch YouTube videos of somebody else playing Roblox.

Just wait until businesses and public corporations are sent notices for renewals on seasons tickets that they can no longer tax deduct. LOL, Trump’s tax code is going to be a kick in the nuts they’re never going to recover from.

Growing up in SoCal, listening to Vin Scully and Chick Hearn, I know how you feel.

Maybe Goodell can bribe one of the GMs with part of his enormous salary.

Some people turn off the TV sound and listen to the radio broadcast.

They say it’s like ‘Old Times’...................

I agree but the NFL is run by hard core liberals, critical thinking is not in their toolbox.

I both listen to and watch baseball, depending on where I am and what I am doing. My main issue about listening on the radio is missing great catches and plays.

“He made an unbelievable catch!” or makes me want to see it.

I find it easier to do stuff while listening than to do stuff while watching. As well, with the net, it is now possible to pick up radio broadcasts of just about everything. I caught about half the games of my high school this year—and they are three time zones and four decades away. It brought back good childhood memories. And they made it to the state championship for the fifth or sixth time in school history (where they were blown out). Some of the players are kids of people I went to school with. Much more fun than the NFL.

I think that's right. When I was a teenager I watched at least one NFL game every Sunday and so did my friends. How many 15 year olds today do this?

I was in my car driving to do some errands; and, I had the radio on for the Mariners' game.

Dave Niehaus was still alive and broadcasting at that time on the day that Franklin Gutierrez made an unbelieveable catch. Niehaus was so excited about that catch that he said Gutierrez was:

"Death to Flying Things" – first to call Franklin Gutiérrez by his current nickname[7]

Actually, I think at the time, he said: Death to ALL Flying things. It was an amazing catch; and, I couldn't wait to get home and see a replay of that catch.

Heh. nfl luxury boxes -- along with the rest of the stadiums -- will become abandoned blighted ghettos.

We tried it once but there’s too much of a delay between the radio comments and what you’re seeing where the radio commentary is ahead of the game by almost seven seconds; OTOH when a team is playing at home the radio commentary is usually in sync with the playing.
