Well an elk is a huge animal and they are usually in a remote location. It might take 2-3 trips to get it all out so you can’t just field dress it and drag it off like a Georgia deer. But at least the guide should have known to keep a weapon within reach or on his person and a round chambered. Mistakes can be deadly.
So sorry for them. It's not like I've never done anything stupid before.
I think I see the problem. It's Oregon. Without doing the research, I would guess that Wyoming has more reasonable game and gun laws.
I have the 1895 Cowboy as well, and I love the longer barrel and the 9 round capacity also. Took two deer with it this year, using the 325 grain Hornady leverevolution for my buck, and a new round I wanted to try, made by Defender Ammo Co., 350g flat nose. Great ammo at a good price, if you’re like me and don’t reload Defender has about the best deals on 45/70 I’ve found so far, Vet owned, smaller company, good people to work with too.
Yep, all that Glock will do is piss the grizzly off. You have to understand that a bullet can penetrate as deeply as it can to no avail. UNless it hits brain or heart, the bear blubber seals the wound and Mr. Grizzly will keep right on a coming.
A .40 will bounce right off a grizzly skull from the front.
This is why the hypocrisy of the left who are anti-hunting is so obvious. Any time I bring this up to them they always run away without a reply.
That’ll do it.
I have a 1975 Colt Trooper MKIII im .357Mag, using Hornady 158g HPs. I took out a rabid coon at 50yds; not much left. I’d
guess it’d take any Bear down, depending upon shot placement.
My son has the Marlin. I have the Henry which looks awesome. Overall, I give the nod to the Marlin. I prefer the side port loading of the Marlin. It is certainly better if you ever find yourself in a quick load and shoot situation. With the longer barrel, I think it hits harder, too.
A quick check shows that you can carry a firearm in Wyoming during bow season
States vary considerably in game laws. Here in Oregon, black powder hunters are limited to primitive weapons... no in-line ignition. They get special seasons, when the rut is on. The trade-off is having to use challenging gear.
People will cheat. Just a fact. Some of the areas around here get so thick with people hunting elk with rifles that the competition leads some to steal other’s kills.
Mark you just lost me and I know you don’t mind, you’ll live.
We share different values and taht always ends up in an argument.
Like I said, you’ll survive!! lol
i wish you the best
“This was during the year of hell when they force-integrated the schools in Hillsboro County fl.”
I was in school in Hillsboro Co about that time, but moved back to MI before they got the integrations finished.
When the bussing started the Principal was warned they were coming, and he had all toughest guys in the school waiting with ball bats.
He told the bus driver that anyone that got off that bus would never get back on, and he meant it!
Nobody got off. BTW...that was Dowdell Jr High, Tampa, Fla.
Yeah, 50% Fail Rate.
I couldnt imagine going Bow Hunting for Elk in a Bear Feeding Sector without possessing and knowing how to use a Handgun of large caliber.
My High Point .45 has never jammed - 750 rounds so far. Not too many I suppose.
But if it did it will work very well as a club as it’s kinda heavy. ;)
I prefer a revolver, period. The more complicated the mechanism, the more likely a malfunction.
I’ve gotten within tackling distance of two, that I know of. The scary thing about them is how silently they beat a retreat.
“Yep, all that Glock will do is piss the grizzly off.”
Hmmmm...
“We have found four cases where 9 mm pistols were used to defend against bears. All were successful...
...The male grizzly bluff charged several times...The aggressive bear was finally shot with the 9 mm pistol at close range. It ran off...the bear was found dead the next day. Eye-witness believes it was one shot to the chest of the bear.”
One can never be certain, but there are a number of cases where shooting a big bear with a small handgun worked out OK for the shooter.
Went along on more hunts for brown bear with friends that had a tag than I did as a hunter, just along for the experience and extra gun when stationed in Alaska. First few times we were all from the lower 48 and legally residents by just being stationed there ..... zip experience with brown bears. Not now or have I ever been a trophy hunter.
.. My experience with ANY bear threat was Cinnamon / Black Bears around Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico as a kid and Elk or Mule Deer Hunting in Colorado.
My “noob weapons” of primary choice in Alaska was a SW Mod 29 and a Ruger No 1 Tropical that left the factory as a 458 Win Mag and had been re-chambered in 460 Weatherby Mag before I bought it from a local shop. Still have the Ruger No 1.
My “truck gun” every day carry was a Remington 870 with a slug barrel. This was back when Uncle Sugars Wind Force didn’t have a hissy fit if you were armed on or off base.
This was pretty much before the Glock era, especially the 10mm era of glocks.
... Over time and a few trips TDY back and forth to bases in Alaska I carried a custom Bowen 500 Linebaugh . Still have that and and carry it or a Bowen custom “Alpine” Redhawk when hunting / wheeling or Fly fishing the Rockies.
All this aside I observed many locals carrying carrying a double barrel 12 ga , short as legal or not loaded with 00 Buck and a Slug that was slung on they’re shoulder, muzzle down as they walked the trails to and from. When I asked em about it they said if a bear busted out of the brush they would have little time to get one or maybe two shots if any at all. Slug or Buck.
Best recipe over my years of hunting in Bear / Big Cat Country is one hunter dresses out the game and another stands watch with long gun in hand ..... minimum. Third hunter best plan and to load out the meat harvest .
Over time and in bear country I determined that short double barrel 12ga and a dog , preferably trained and a 44mag revolver on my hip is best for me in general.
Agree ..... good post.
Good info .......
Good story. Amazing too that someone pinged humblegunner to a vanity post.
