Wyoming Bear Attack Glock had No Round in Chamber, Magazine & Pistol Separated

On Friday afternoon, the 14th of September, Mark Uptain, a hunting guide, and Corey Chubon, a bow hunter,  were attacked by grizzly bears as they processed an elk carcass. Chubon had mortally wounded the elk with an arrow, the day before, but they had not recovered it before nightfall.

They came back the next day and followed a good blood trail to the dead elk.

They had nearly finished processing it when they were attacked by the grizzly bears. The attack started with a full out charge.  Uptain was hit by the bear first, then Chubon, then the bear went back to Uptain. Chubon fled and survived, getting help.

The investigations have nearly finished, and some questions have been answered.  It was known that Mark Uptain's Glock 20 10 mm semi-automatic pistol was with the hunters' packs. People have wondered why the pistol was in a pack, where it did little good for defense from bears. The Glock 20 was the only firearm at the scene of the attack. The pistol was not in a pack. Mark Uptain was wearing the Glock in a chest holster. He deliberately took off the pistol, took off his shirt, and placed both the pistol and his shirt near the two packs.

Relying on bear spray, instead of a Glock 20, had a terrible effect. Bear spray did not work. Untrained hunter could not make Glock 20 work, because it had an empty chamber.

Bear spray is a joke; works on people, but not bears at 30-50ft.

I carry either a Kimber 1911 10mm w/180gr HPs, or a Kimber 1911 .45 ACP w/230gr HPs, and a Beowulf .50cal w/ 425gr HPs. They stay with me, not over by a pack and my shirt. Idiots got what they deserved.

All the bear spray did was get Mark Uptain killed.

Anyone who carries anthing less than a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 magnum or larger, is under armed when hunting in Grizzly land. In this case,it led to tragedy.

I have seen a .44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk 50 yard head shot to a 1200 pound bull moose, turn the animal over on its back in an instant kill, all 4 legs to the sky. It will stop a grizzly.

Lets see here. In bear country wound a big deer and let it bleed a good bit. Next day show up and butcher it out sending delicious smells wafting to the bruins fattening up before hibernation. While engaging in butchering out this nice carcass discard weapons ‘safely’ so no one will be injured. Hang around when a bear shows up as an uninvited lunch guest. This looks to be a classic’Bear Tale’ about how not to do it.

The two times I was knocked unconscious in what are today called the knockout game, I never saw it coming. I just woke up with my face planted on the ground. I carry with a chambered round, but even with good situational awareness it’s possible you may never even get a chance to draw, let alone chamber a round.

In both knockouts, the assailant came running up silently from behind and hit me with something. In both cases, he kept running. This was during the year of hell when they force-integrated the schools in Hillsboro County fl.

If they had a Ruger revolver of the caliber you suggest, this probably would have had a better ending.
There is always a better chance for something to go wrong with a semi-auto in such a harrowing situation. Revolvers are simpler and more reliablem
Sad needless tragedy. There have been many instances of attacks by bears in situitions like this one.

What kind of nut goes into the wild (bear country, no less) without protection (or even without the knowledge of how to use such protection). And I sure wouldn't consider a Glock 10MM protection from an attacking bear.

This so-called hunting guide is guilty of gross negligence.

The main point is as Democrat bad law separates guns and ammo, we all get hurt.

Cheers to Ammoland for a salient point to throw back at Loser Democrats.

The OP of this article was on Bill Frady’s Lock and Load Radio Show saying that bears are also attracted to the sound of gunshots because they associate them with food.

I honestly am not surprised.

Single action revolvers are high reliability fire arms. And the modern versions are also very safe to carry. People do not like to carry them because they are heavy.

Laziness can end your life in Grizzly Land.

Chest carry holster may be best although the baldric style holster belt over the shoulder with a waist and leg tie down is what I use.I have also seen leather tool belts with leather suspender straps modified to carry at the hip or small of the back.

I feel sorry for these guys. They were likely swept away by the elation of securing their kill, and anticipating a BBQ in the field.

The old story of two hunters when the Bear attacked. One said I don’t have to run faster than the bear, only you.

My cousin is a hunting guide in Alaska. He maintains that brown bears absolutely associate gunshots with free food.

I use bear spray. I also have a Ruger .44 mag pistol.

I spray the bullets before I load the pistol.

That way the bear spray will get to the bear much faster and seems to be more effective.

I’ve never owned a semi automatic pistol that didn’t jam at least once, even with factory ammo.
