Dinosaur fossils kept secret for years show the day of killer asteroid

The researchers say they found evidence in North Dakota of the asteroid hit in Mexico, including fish with hot glass in their gills from flaming debris that showered back down on Earth.

They also reported the discovery of charred trees, evidence of an inland tsunami and melted amber.

Additionally, University of Amsterdam professor Jan Smit said he and his colleagues found footsteps from dinosaurs moments before they met their untimely death.

Smit said the footprints — one from a plant-eating hadrosaur and the other of a meat eater, maybe a small Tyrannosaurus Rex — is "definite proof that the dinosaurs were alive and kicking at the time of impact ...

They were running around, chasing each other" when they were swamped.

"This is the death blow preserved at one particular site.

This is just spectacular," said Purdue University geophysicist and impact expert Jay Melosh, who wasn't part of the research but edited the paper released Friday by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Melosh called it the field's "discovery of the century."

Despite the incredible finds, other experts in the field have concerns about the work, including the lack of access to this specific Hell Creek Formation fossil site for outside scientists.

Hell Creek — which spans Montana, both Dakotas and Wyoming — is a fossil treasure trove that includes numerous types of dinosaurs, mammals, reptiles and fish trapped in clay and stone from 65 to 70 million years ago.

Actually, it's evidence of the ‘terra-cleansing’ that was being done by the same aliens that were terra-forming the Earth, and who had put dinosaurs on the planet in the first place. They wanted to make Earth more habitable for hominids, but the dinosaurs kept eating them, and thus the terra-cleansing. /s

...

This is either one of the greatest scientific discoveries ever, or it’s a fraud. They need to allow access for confirmation.

“This is either one of the greatest scientific discoveries ever, or it’s a fraud.”

How would one go about pulling a fraud of this magnitude off without being detected?

sounds like it could also be evidence of a wildfire or volcanic eruption to me, or any of the regularly occurring smaller impacts.

Cool find, if verified by others.

Now, about that Bible verse written before we knew dinosaurs existed, which claims that birds (dinosaurs) were created before mammals (domestic critters).

And that life began in the seas, before the birds were created. Dang those pesky “dates” though! (It’s hard to get the powers of ten right iffen you don’t have a zero, a ten, much less any “powers of ten” notation ... and a “big number” is “seventy times seven”

They say the site was dated 66 Million years ago, but that’s a million years too early as Dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago.

So something ain’t right

I can understand the need to protect the site from thieves and whoever gets access will be involved in career making discoveries so turf-protection will remain high.

There is no upside into allowing multitudes of looky-loos.

fish with hot glass in their gills

I'm fighting a bad chest cold -- that "hot glass in their gills" business makes it seem a little less bad...

Thank you for posting the animations. I greatly enjoy "artist's conceptions" of space rocks hitting earth. They're always so utterly and completely out of scale, both in size and time, that they are laughable. And this morning, I needed a laugh. :-)

For instance, the impact ejecta is shown moving at what appears to be about 1/10 light-speed (unlikely), and the atmospheric shock wave is shown expanding at around 600 miles per second, that is, about a million MPH (also unlikely). But considerably more entertaining than something more realistic. The incredible speed-up makes for a more fascinating image, no doubt about it.

Now if I can just tear my eyes away from it.

So much fraud since the 1840s on this, there is no reason to trust the science pimps now. Time and time again they were wrong, more so than they were ever right.
Please tell me no tax money was used.

Mammals, being warm-blooded were able to run rings around the cold-blooded dinosaurs. And eat their eggs.

Paleontologists can be nasty, jealous folks. I have a friend who found a T-Rex on private land in the Hell Creek Formation. A very nice specimen, since sold for big bucks.

They are serious, but amateur Paleontologists, not affiliated with a University. They are hated by many in Academia because they sell their finds, even though they use professional experts, document their digs, and make their data available to anyone who asks. They have also found a very nice Oviraptor that helped demonstrated that they guarded their own eggs and were not robbers of other nests. Lots of petty argument.

The same thing occurs among professionals, they don’t like people who make big finds like this one. Most land in the West is federally owned, with many restrictions on fossil hunting and digging, most of them imposed by some self appointed major domo scientist. That makes private land a premium, and both amateurs and professional work years to build a relationship with land owners. Most of the land owners want to control who they allow on their land and they are not willing to turn it into a petting zoo for scientists. These guys are publishing their finds, so their jealous colleagues can take a hike.

Hell Creek has been known as a paleontological gold mine for quite some time.

66 million ya is the accepted date for the asteroid strike and the C-T boundary. All of these dates are estimates based on dating methods, +/- X number of years. The problem is that no one was around to record the exact date.
