Weekly Garden Thread - June 1-7, 2019
June 1, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 05/31/2019 6:16:18 PM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

Our 'Greeneyes' has been FOUND, but she is STILL having computer issues, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns.

That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post, but it depends upon what is going on here at MY farm. (It's Spring; it's BUSY!)

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

This weather has been crazy. I might have to rig up or buy a mini greenhouse.

(I don’t really have a garden-just the odd squash and tomato or two and herbs tucked into corners of my small, suburban rental yard)

Between the rain and the cold things have been abysmal.

I was looking forward to my garlic crop but the weather has made it rusty beyond repair and it probably won’t bulb.

The cold snap put my green bean seedlings in a state of suspended animation that they never recovered from. Same thing with the cucumbers.

I kept replanting marigolds that were being eaten and finally got a couple of good ones but the cold killed those too.

New seeds popping up and green beans and cucumbers have been replanted and are starting to come up.

Only a few of my San Marzanos made it. I have them in the ground next to some two liter bottles with holes in them so I can keep them hydrated in summer. So far, so good.

I have about 13 squash plants that made it so they are in the small hugel bed with water bottle insurance.

I forgot about the grapevines. One red seedless I almost gave up on resurrected itself after about 3 or 4 nonbearing years. The concord has a bunches and bunches if the tree rats, mice and raccoons don’t get them.

Not real good at this but I keep on trying every year.

:)

Garlic is the only thing that is growing for me in northern Illinois. Tomato plants about 3 inches high. My pepper plants got up to about 2 inches then the rabbits ate them. Farmers here gave up and will take their insurance. 2019 = write-off.

Here in the high altitude Rocky Mountains at 8.500 ft elevation the summer is short and I have only had luck with cold weather crops like potatoes, turnips and collard greens.

I am doing 4 types of potatoes...Pontiac Red, Yukon Gold, Russet and White Superior. I also have summer squash and tomatoes still indoors. The potatoes are off to a slow start due to cold weather. The forecast was not bad, but the actual weather was bad with snow and temps down to 23F after I planted potatoes 6 weeks ago. I have been digging up a few and none had frozen and turned to mush. This week has been warmer and I am seeing some growth. on the chits I dig up.

I got sweet potato slips from Gurneys about a month ago, but it was much to cold to plant so I put them into jars of water indoors and they seem to be doing well so far. I am having problems with weather forecasts that often say overnight temps will be in the 40’s, but my indoor/outdoor thermometer shows lows in the 20’s and we have snow or frost in the morning.

(Thank you Diane in the Driftless!)

Cali; Congrats on the grapes anyway!

Try figs! (If you like them!) You can grow them in pots or put them in the ground. They will tolerate heat

Since Kansas gets hot (although not too much this year) I am going to try them. I think I can make them work. I’ll just have to bring them in in the winter. (6b...can get down to -5 on occasion) If I move I can take them with me (At least the ones in pots!)

(Time for bed! Good night!

Figs in pots?

Good idea!

My mom has a big fig tree in her yard but she lives in a place where the critters get them first.

I read somewhere that in Italy they used to tip them over and bury them or something so they wouldn’t freeze in winter.

If they can survive that they’ll probably survive being in my yard...

:)

Article about storing fig trees over winter.

Burying?

Doesn’t look like they’d survive by looking at the picture but I guess they do....

Wow (post # 2)..... that's a mouthful. ;-)

Update on our 3,000 sq. foot pachysandra bed here near Pittsburgh, PA that was being overtaken by Canadian thistle.

We physically went in there, bent down, rubber gardening gloves on, and pulled out hundreds of the shoots two weeks ago.

A couple have continued to show up, but that is to be expected.

I can say to others with a thistle problem like this, it looks like this plant can be beaten by being persistent tearing out the green shoots when they show up. Eventually the root/rhizome system of the plant fails ..... because it relies on shoots absorbing sunshine to "feed" the roots.

Easy to say ............. I still HATE thistle!
