The tourism minister grimaced as he read aloud the causes of death in autopsy reports of the growing number of Americans who have died recently while vacationing in the Dominican Republic: Heart attack. Septic shock. Pneumonia.
More accustomed to ribbon-cutting ceremonies than to grappling with the uproar over Americans turning up dead in their hotel rooms, the minister, Fernando Javier García, insisted that the authorities had nothing to hide.
There is no mystery whatsoever regarding any of these deaths, said Mr. García, even as he acknowledged that the F.B.I. was investigating what had happened to a Maryland couple found dead in their room at an all-inclusive resort in La Romana on May 30.

Killing your customers is not a good business model.................
I have no interest in going to these resort islands and locations anymore. I think the liquor is tainted and there are no health regulations or codes to enforce craftsmanship and a safe product from these home grown distillers. I’ve read also of many rapes that go unmentioned. No Thanks....tons of places to go to here in the states with laws that protect you.
At the root of the matter is third-world politics.
One has to ask who benefits if the DR’s tourism economy were to go in the tank?
Your wife is wise.
Vacation deals to die for
I sense a revolution brewing beneath the surface there in the DR that the ‘ministry of tourism’ is not going to allow publish. Like the ‘causes’ of death listed by the DR Government they are all symptoms of something that happened to these individuals. Someone’s trying to drive the tourist industry away from this place. If this doesnt work then they’ll achieve the goal in a more assertive manner.
Anyone going there better watch your six
Never Kill A Customer..........Until They Pay the Bill!
I’m not going there.
We have been to the Bahia Principe in Punta Cana and it was wonderful. They have an adult only section where everything from the food to the liquor is first quality. We would go back without hesitation. Also went to a Bahia Principe in Cancun that was just as nice so we were really excited to find out that there were Bahia Principes in Tenerife. We booked it for our first vacation in Spain. It was horrible, low grade dog food and nasty rooms. A letdown to say the least.
Travel there should be suspended.

Fewer than there used to be, there are now states that refuse to protect the citizens from illegal aliens.
LOL - agree.

DR "immigrants" in the USA are, more often than not, involved with drug salesincluding fentanyl. It doesn't take much fentanyl to kill. :(
Final autopsy results are often late due to toxicology reports.
Been to only one “all inclusive” in Costa Rica. Doubt the liquor was tainted, but the only drink that wasn’t overly weak was the local beerImperial. I doubt anyone, anywhere taints beer.
Its not such a good deal if you end up in the hospital.
22 years ago I went to all inclusive resort in Playa Del Carman, Mexico. It was a package deal including roundtrip air from Boston. To this day I still refer to it as the vacation from H#LL. The flights were delayed in both directions because it was a low budget charter airline. The hotel was brand new. Even the people cooking your meals. The could not make toast correctly. I got sick from the lady sitting behind me on the flight down. I spent one day in the room with a fever. I got over that and then got Montezuma’s Revenge. The flight back was delayed for 5 hours. Our limo picking us up at the airport left. They had to send another. I will NEVER buy a “vacation deal” again.

You nailed it! We’ve got the Atlantic coast, the Pacific coast, and the Gulf coast, so there are plenty of beach resorts to be found where the locals speak English, the booze is safe, the restaurants are inspected, and you are not targeted for being an American.
Many locales are within driving distance so no TSA, and you can even carry protection.
There could be a couple different problems.
There may be some all inclusive resorts using cheap liquor. It may contain methanol. This will make you sick and potentially kill you.
However, many of the deaths were from pulmonary edema. Fluid in the lungs. This is not typical from methanol poisoning. This is most likely according to what I have read in the last week from pesticide poisoning. Most likely the companies maintaining the landscaping at the resorts. It could also be the companies contracted to spray to kill insects. Roaches/palmetto bugs are a big problem in the tropics. Who says they are using something not approved in the US.
There is a story about a couple suing one of these resorts for pesticide poisoning from a year ago. They did not die. They just got really sick from something they were spraying outside their room.
Rapes happen all the time on cruise ships too. Many go unreported because the woman was drunk and it happens in the open seas or in dock of some foreign country. All the major cruise ships fly flags of Panama, Liberia or some other foreign country. That means once you leave the port in the US you are subject to whatever flag they fly. Some of these rapes are by other passengers. Many are by crew members. This is some Carnival & Royal Caribbean do not like to advertise.
