Philippa Ashford, 61, was celebrating with her loved ones just after midnight in a cul-de-sac of Houstons Laurel Oaks neighborhood where family and friends were shooting off fireworks when she suddenly clutched her body and said, I think Ive been shot,
Authorities went from house to house searching for shell casings and trying to find out where the gunfire came from.
The incident came after Houston authorities had warned locals not to fire their guns during New Years celebrations.
Another man was also shot in the wrist just after midnight in Houston by celebratory gunfire, while he was outside with his roommate, KHOU reported.

So - you have your wish - and again - people are not obeying the law. Stop trying to legislate people's fun away.
And a lot of people feel the same way about guns. Do you agree with them?? FAR better to have designated areas where such is allowed and can be done safely. Kind of hard to tell a person who lives in the country on an acre or more of land that they can't set off fireworks on their own property.
Me? If you live there then it's your own laws that are taking your fun away....Change them!......LOL!
And NO - my own laws don't "take my fun away" - I can go to a family member's house or friend's house in the country if we want to do that. Because - in the country your concerns are moot.
Stop it with your silly nonsense, of course I don't......Sheesh!
There's a difference between my 2nd Amend right to own a firearm for protection of me and my family and my property and that to shoot fireworks off indiscriminately that have nothing to do with protecting my family and ultimately piss off the neighbors due to their usage.........
You're an idiot.......
Only an idiot celebrates with gunfire in a city-there are people everywhere you might hit-I live in a rural area and some of my neighbors were firing pistols into the air right along with the fireworks-but my neighbors are acres away-no one gets hurt...
I grew up on a ranch in W Texas-some of my uncles and cousins used to fire guns into the air on New Years-along with other people on the road-it was common-I’ve never indulged in that myself-seems unsafe and wastes ammo, but it has always been common where I’m from-the custom did not cross the river with the mojados...
Do whatever the hell you want out where you live. Your living in the country is moot considering the location of where this story occurred..a highly populated neighborhood.......Nice try
My brain hurts reading that statement about a woman that was shot weapon
I live in the country for a couple of reasons-I grew up in the country and I hate cities-and in the country nannies do not run around demanding their neighbors stop doing something they don’t like-everybody minds their own damn business, unlike in cities-shunning, etc can happen...
And opening up the front door to let in the New Year, and opening up the backdoor to let out the old year. -Tom
Mine too.....How many such celebratory deaths do you hear about on Easter?
WXYZ's Dave Rexroth might have some personal insight into the indiscriminate use of celebratory fireworks......check him out.
For those who simply must fire their weapons in celebration...
FIRE STRAIGHT UP!!
Because you don’t want to murder a stranger.
Right out of college I used to live in a bad area of Los Angeles. New Year’s was filled with shotgun and rifle blasts into the air, despite all the public warnings about how dangerous this was.
Diversity celebrating with the deadly weapons that Americans won’t.
Oh yeah? Hold muh beer and watch this.

In Florida, such gunfire is primarily among Puerto Ricans and Mexicans, less so with Cubans. Notably, since Cubans tend to be conservative and to vote Republican, while Puerto Ricans and Mexicans are liberal and vote Democrat, we can say that the problem of dangerous and illegal celebratory gunfire is primarily a matter of irresponsible liberal Democrats — which of course is the root cause of so many of the ills of American life.
In both cases, it is ultimately about freedom and the right to use ones OWN property as they choose. You've just got a hard on about fireworks and want them banned. So do the people who want guns banned.
So it hurts your little doggie's ears ONE OR TWO DAYS A YEAR. That is hardly an unconscionable hardship for either the dog OR you.
There's an idiot involved here, all right...but it ain't me....
