Treasure Hunter Finds the First Celtic Chariot Burial in Wales, Rewrites Ancient History

A metal detectorist in Pembrokeshire in Wales has made a discovery that could change how we understand the history of the ancient Celts.

The unearthing of a Celtic chariot burial in a Welsh field astonishes experts because this find is the first of its kind in Wales. It is sure to throw light on the Welsh Iron Age and its connections with the wider Celtic world.

Mike Smith, from Milford Haven, has been a metal detectorist for 30 years and is an active member of the Pembrokeshire Prospectors. Earlier this year, he was exploring a muddy field when he came across a metal object.

He was only there because “flooding on his usual detecting route led him to search in a different area” reports the Western Telegraph .

Mr. Smith first thought that he had unearthed a brooch, but it was later revealed to be a piece of a Celtic horse harness. Returning the next day, Mr. Smith dug a few inches into the ground and came across more bronze items and decorative pieces still shining with bright red enameling.

You might enjoy the Brit TV series ‘Detectorists’, bottle caps, old metal buttons and pull tabs from beer cans are the usual finds of the two main characters.

More true than you know.

Numerable years ago I’d seen a show talking about the idea that some of the time that Egypt had had different dynasties ruling at the same time from different capitols. When next I visited my alma mater I ran into a professor of archaeology and I brought it up.

His reaction, that it would mess everything up, surprised me. You see they date other civilizations by Egypt (potteryetc) but assume the timeline has no overlap between dynasties.

So if true the idea should fix things that are broken ... but would also cause havoc with a lot of existing work.

Not saying that there is significant overlaps, though some physical evidence suggests there might be, but the reaction itself was telling. And odd considering that the Maya were his focus.

This is for the old timers who will recognize the artifact found in the punch line.

There was a great radio show with Phil Harris and Alice Faye. Phil had a boozer pal named Remley who always involved Phil into his crack-brained adventures.

One episode was a bout a treasure map Remley found. They go to some out-of-the-way spot in the woods and, per the map, start digging.
Remley: “Clunk!” I hit something.
Phil: Keep digging. It might be the treasure!
Remley: It looks like a silver disk.
Phil: That’s the treasure! We’re RICH!
Remley: There’s some writing on it.
Phil, barely containing himself: What’s it say? What’s it say?
Remley: “Pontiac”

So a guy in a bar overhears two women talking, and he says, “I couldn’t help but hear your accents - are you ladies from Ireland?”

One women snarled back, “It’s Wales, you idiot!”

The man replied, “Oh, pardon me - are you two whales from Ireland?”
