Hundreds of Londoners lined up for a sample of Popeyes chicken this weekend, as the franchise opened its first restaurant in the United Kingdom.
The New York Times is reporting the event had its moments of culture shock, as British diners weren’t fully acquainted with the Popeyes biscuit, as the word usually means what Americans would refer to as a “cookie.”
“It looks like a scone,” Victoria Ubochi said after trying the biscuit, “but it doesn’t taste like one.”
Tom Crowley, the chief executive of Popeyes U.K., told the newspaper that focus groups showed Britons were a bit flummoxed by the buttermilk biscuit.
On top of that, biscuits resemble scones, usually served with hot tea instead of fried chicken.
“I guess if we ran with the research,” Crowley said, “we probably wouldn’t have done it, if I’m honest.”

Call them American Biscuits and you are all set. Mr. Thomas made a fortune selling “muffins” that didn’t resemble anything we had here, even though “English Muffins” weren’t native to England, either.
I bet London mayor Khan will ban Popeye’s from seasoning their green beans with ham for not being halal.
Just advertise them as “savory scones”. Then the Brits will get it.

So Brits can get just as fat as Americans.
I make Yorkshire pud from time to time. Yummy! I make giant ones in a small cast iron pan and pour over hash I make from veg, roast, and gravy.
I do miss crumpets in the UK. The frozen kind I get here are not the same.
Does it have Spam in it?
Or steak and kidney pie. Yummm
And of course, the British are world renowned for their exquisite cuisine.

Wait. A large corporation with seemingly a ton of marketing experts didn’t know that “biscuit” means something different in the King’s English than in America? Great research guys.

And the whole thing is run by Italians
