Oxford archaeologists discover monumental evidence of prehistoric hunting across Arabian desert

Archaeologists at the University of Oxford’s School of Archaeology have used satellite imagery to identify and map over 350 monumental hunting structures known as ‘kites’ across northern Saudi Arabia and southern Iraq – most of which had never been previously documented...

Termed kites by early aircraft pilots, these structures consist of low stone walls making up a head enclosure and a number of guiding walls, sometimes kilometres long. They are believed to have been used to guide game such as gazelles into an area where they could be captured or killed...

Kites cannot be observed easily from the ground, however the advent of commercial satellite imagery and platforms such as Google Earth have enabled recent discoveries of new distributions. While these structures were already well-known from eastern Jordan and adjoining areas in southern Syria, these latest results take the known distribution over 400km further east across northern Saudi Arabia, with some also identified in southern Iraq for the first time...

Evidence suggests considerable resources would have had to be coordinated to build, maintain, and rebuild the kites over generations, combined with hunting and returning butchered remains to settlements or camps for further preservation. The researchers suggest that their exaggerated scale and form may be an expression of status, identity and territoriality. Appearances of the kites in rock art found in Jordan suggests they had an important place within the symbolic and ritual spheres of Neolithic peoples in the region.

So I take it the Arabs found oil a lot sooner than we thought, and drove around in SUVs to hunt down these animals not realizing the area would superheat and turn into desert.

I think you’ve got it: the Rabs were driving their Toyotas to herd the non-existent gazelles into wide open corrals, in the non-existent grassy plains, where they sword danced them to death. then took them to lunch in towns that weren’t there yet, kept them in oil fired reefers until supper. But not even a gazelle bone? sure. That’s what they were doing. Are these the same guys who built the pyramids? theory needs work——

Which simply confirms that climate has been changing for Billions of years. Humans could barely start a fire using twigs and flintstones during last ice age. Yet those ice ages get regularly finshed by global warming.

Hello...it is our Sun causing climate change. Sun is MILLION times bigger than puny earth. The Sun does not release energy at a super constant rate. It has higher and lower rates of activity. Man is so puny even comparedto the puny earth, astronauts in orbit can’t see any man made objects.

You can turn deserts green with water, or carbon dioxide.

The Sun is only 333,000 times bigger than Earth. But otherwise, yeah. The climate is 100 percent natural 100 percent of the time.

You may be entirely correct, except I disticntly remember seeing a graphic illustration showing 1 million earth size spheres would fit inside volume of Sun. But there are other measures of size such as mass and density.

That’s probably it, the Moon is roughly one quarter the diameter of the Earth, roughly one eighth the volume, and roughly one hundredth the mass.

That's because Fred had a lighter...

I remember a funny joke about A man who said he was such a great lumberjack.
He said his last job was “the Sahara forest“
I said “that’s not a forest, it’s a desert“
He replies, “sure! Now.“

I love vaudeville. :^) It crops up in “Robin Hood, Men in Tights”, if memory serves.
