The Biden administration took a first step Friday toward ending federal protections for grizzly bears in the northern Rocky Mountains, which would open the door to future hunting in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho....
Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte welcomed the administration’s announcement and said it could lead to the state reclaiming management of a species that’s been under federal protections since 1975. He said the grizzly’s recovery "represents a conservation success."
The federal government removed protections for the Yellowstone ecosystem’s grizzlies in 2017. Wyoming and Idaho were set to allow grizzlies to be hunted when a judge restored those protections in 2018, siding with environmental groups that said delisting wasn’t based on sound science. Those groups want protections kept in place so bears can continue moving into new areas.
"We should not be ready to trust those states," said attorney Andrea Zaccardi, of the Center for Biological Diversity....
A decision on the states’ petitions was long overdue. Idaho Gov. Brad Little on Thursday had filed notice he intended to sue over the delay. Idaho's petition was broader than the ones filed by Montana and sought to lift protections nationwide....

Studies of black bears and polar bears indicate the practice is common among the three species.
“There is a study from Europe which shows Grizzly bears, mostly mature males, kill 25% of young bears every year.”

I have eaten bear meat too. It wasn’t bad.
I do remember reading that the grizzly population was down to 200(might have been 800). Their most popular area was present day Los Angeles, meaning they like human friendly areas.
I’ve eaten it also...Burgers on the grill. Very good.
Anyone working for a place with a name like that has lost my support.
Let’s relocate grizzly bears to inner cities. They will ensure that the overpopulation of the violent demographic occupying those places will cease.
Ship them to areas they used to be in. New Mexico, AZ, Colorado...
I believe Colorado has a Grizz refuge in the San Juans that has not seen a grizzly in decades.

Can’t happen. Somewhere in the US, a judge (times 100) is slavering to order an injunction against delisting for another 10 years of study. Causes and organizations are big business. Entire careers are made in protecting wolves and bears (and toads and owls, etc.).
Last year in Montana—during hunting season with no particular evidence of overkill—the quotas were set aside for a new set of hunting rules. By a judge.
Montana has yet to meet a kill quota for wolves. The population continues to grow far beyond the original target (same with bears).
But the wolf advocates keep stalling and fighting to stop the hunts. Likewise with bears.
depends on what the animal has been eating. If they have gorged themselves on berries, the meat is not bad. If their diet has had a lot of salmon, then the meat sorta tastes like rotten fish.
In the early days 1800’s the range of the Ursus Horribilis was from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast and from Alaska to Mexico. Early trappers formed large hunting parties to kill as many as possible. Common rifles at the time were .36 caliber muzzle loaders which were not very effective against large bears. The bear attack in the movie “The Revenant” was historically and medically accurate. As the West was settled the grizzly bears had to go. Their ferocity and bad attitude are legendary. They haven’t changed much.
I once harvested a spring black bear that had been feeding on a winter-killed moose. The meat was so bad it went to the dump. OTOH, a black bear that had been eating spring beach grass was mighty tasty. I once treated a patient who had consumed undercooked grizzly meat that was infested with trichonosis. He almost died and he lost so much of his muscle mass that his career as a construction laborer was over.
