What are we usually missing from the ancient world? Wood! Fortunately, the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 preserved a lot of wooden objects- ranging from a bed and crib, to a table, bench, and shrine, and more! Usually, these items are not on display, but on the occasion of a new exhibit, we are now able to examine the world of carpentry through these objects of everyday life- and many other artifacts- rarely preserved from Antiquity. A truly unique collection of artwork from ancient Herculaneum.

Now, if you had a PEZ dispenser from Vesuvius, THAT would be worth $10,000. There are lots of wealthy collectors willing to pony up for something like that.

I went to the Pompeii exhibit at the Reagan library several years ago. If you ever get a chance, I highly recommend this exhibit. It is stunning how advanced these people actually were.

I searched for it or something similar, and was reminded that the Chicago MSI had one for about a year, ended last month. Whoops.

The Getty had one in 2013:

Not my day. :^)
