Did they have any airplanes at all, such as the trainers mentioned? Where's his waiver for the physical?
I served in the California Army National Guard 1971-1977. The Armory was in Sunnyvale. Lots of guys (and there were a few women in our unit, too...the 'Pioneers') missed weekend drills...there were WAYS to make up for it. In the beginning, we were a 155 mm Howitzer unit, wondering if our mission would one day involve lobbing projectiles across the Bay to Berkeley, where Freedom Of Speech originated with the radical Free Speech Movement...if you believe what they tell you. But the unit re-organized, becoming a Military Police unit. We were almost called up for the San Francisco Police Strike in '74 (you may have seen pictures of pre-Post Modern, SF cops with huge locks of HAIR flowing out from their little billed caps & down to 'Regulation' length at the top of their shoulders..."Give me down to THERE, hair/Shoulder length or longer, hair/Here, hair/There, hair/Everywhere, hair, hair..."). Mayor Alioto wouldn't have troops in his Baghdad-By-The-Bay, so he & his Staff patrolled the copless streets until the Finest returned.
We were standing inspection one Sunday at the Sunnyvale Armory. The Private next to me was studying for his PhD in Chemistry at Stanford...a real wise-ass. The Captain was an Air Marshall in his Real World job...riding around the World on United, TWA, and other airlines that no longer exist, armed to protect the flights from hijacking (a fairly recent innovation then).
A new initiative had been put into effect by the Army, based on actual combat experience in Vietnam: the old, brightly-colored uniform insignia & patches had been replaced by the new 'SUBDUED' patches...strictly black & olive drab...NO reds or blues or yellows which could make for easy targets for 'Charlie'.
The Captain did a perfect Left Face & looked over the Stanford Chemistry student from top to bottom. He said, sternly:
"SOLDIER, you're boots are NOT shined!"
The aspiring Stanford PhD-in-Chemistry responded immediately:
"But, yes they are Sir. It's the new SUBDUED polish!"
Even the Captain had to smile. The inspection was soon concluded...and we all reported to the Break Area. The donuts had arrived...
I was here a long time before you were, Troll.
It's Mr. Dewd to you.
I take back what I said, based on your impressive sign-up date. Looking at your recent posts, it seems you sure know how to find us trolls.
