Echols County - A bootleg liquor operation in South Georgia has been put out of commission.

Echols County Sheriff's Office discovered two moonshine stills Wednesday.

Sheriff Randy Courson says they located the stills on the Wolf Bay Hunting Club Property just off of Highway 84.

Together the stills produce about 130 gallons of liquor. They estimate they'd get $35.00 a gallon if sold.

They say the stills are so dangerous and dirty that the best way to get rid of them is to blow them up.

The GBI, DNR, and the Department of Revenue was brought in to rig the stills with explosives, and they were destroyed Thursday night.

Yeah...that's what I'd say too to justify playing with toys.

These are low producing stills. I thought making a certain (I don;t know how much) was legal.

BS! I know several old-timer moonshiners, and their stills are perfectly safe, if operated by someone who knows what they're doing.

This is all about revenue, and the fact that no alcohol taxes are going to the state from these "entrepreneurs".

They should claim that they are producing ethanol to help relieve dependence on foreign oil (moonshine is mainly ethanol....and, hopefully little else).

That argument sounds ridiculous, unless you consider how many judges are flaming liberals and would buy that argument.

It’s hard for me to believe people are still making Shine. When I was a kid, living in this part of the country, it was a way of life. Then drugs took over.

Per BATF (spit!) regulations, it's only legal to make ethanol if you are properly licensed by the federal and state government, OR if you are making the ethanol for fuel, at which point (at least in Pennsylvania) you are also required to file monthly returns of ethanol produced, along with a check for road usage taxes (at .21 per gallon used--not necessarily produced).

Me Too

I grew up in Kentucky and there was always some Uncle or another breaking out a Mason Jar full of clear white homemade hooch, at family functions. Only tasted it once...yikes!

My Uncle made pure corn liquor. Open the Mason jar and it smelled as if you were shucking fresh corn. He NEVER cut is Shine as many did, so he got the best price.

I take it that there are still snobs out there who still prefer that unique, musky hint of ethylene glycol to low-end ABC store variety Everclear or Stolichnaya. Of course, you'd think this guy would find a way to sell this as a gasoline additive to attract more demand and offset his no doubt rising production costs.

That’s bull,ain’t nothing cleaner than a still,

A friend of mine (70 yrs. old) the other day was telling me a story about his grandaddy and how he brewed and ran shine from Opp to Elba once a month years ago, that still was almost 3 generations old.

See my post #10. A number of folks ARE making ethanol for fuel, and it IS legal, if you get all the proper permissions and pay the required road usage taxes.

My Uncle rand from Albany, to Newton, to Blakely, to the Dothan, AL area. Did it for years, and spent time on two occasions for it. However, at the time of his death, he had a working still. RIP>>>
