Romney for Secretary of State? [Vanity]
Free Republic ^ | November 22, 2016 | Piranha

The Wall Street Journal recently posted that Mitt Romney is emerging as the leading candidate to be Secretary of State in the Trump administration.

Obviously we all know Romney is the poster child for GOPe, and that for whatever reason he threw his debates against Obama in 2012.

Personally, I would like to see him lead a task force to eliminate vast numbers of Federal regulations, but it is not up to me.

In this thread I am concerned with Foreign Policy and nothing else.

Where can we expect Romney to differ from what we expect from President Trump on the Foreign Policy front? Is there anything to be concerned about?

I didn’t do that intentionally. I don’t know how to move it, or what the right category is, for that matter.

I have no problem if you contact the moderator and ask him to put this thread where it belongs. If you tell me how to pick a category, and what category vanities like this belong in, I’ll try to follow those guidelines in the future.

Yes. The Secretary of State must support the President's agenda and not his own. He needs to implement the President's policy and promote the President's message, not his own. Given Romney's feelings towards Trump then I don't see him doing that.

Posted something you wrote yourself as "News"?

Really? Didn't know? OK. Seems legit.

First huge disappointment by Trump. Romney is not trustworthy. He attempted to hand POTUS to Hillary by denying Trump Utah. That means he was just fine with her foreign policy goals and handing over SCOTUS and with it our 1A and 2A rights. I could not care less about his resume or what this says about burying the ‘primary campaign hatchet’. This reeks of Reagan’s Bush mistake.

I can’t fathom why Romney would even fit that job, frankly.

and on a political note, I thought he threw the 2012 election after the first debate ... even Obama said he was packing up his things to vacate the White House, almost anyone could have beaten him in 2012 given his crappy record in office and damage to the nation

and Romney’s behavior after Mr Trump won the 2016 nomination was abhorrent

I think Trump should find someone else for whatever job he might have given Romney. Romney has disqualified himself from any appointments, imho......and there ARE many good, well-qualified people out here...

Okay, I’ll do it because I somehow manage to find the good in everyone: Romney was right on China. The Chinese are currency manipulators, trademark infringers, and market dumpers. He knows about the majority of their tricks. He went to the right on immigration and didn’t back down on it.

He also took one for the team bringing all this to light.

“First Priebus and now Romney? “

I think there’s a Hugh difference between the two:

Priebus supported Trump.

Romney actively campaigned against Trump.

If Romney’s strength is solving business problems, he can take on negotiations for highway construction or even better, dealing with union contracts for federal employees. BUT nothing that puts him on the succession list - certainly not 4th in line.

I voted for Romney for president for one reason.

Barack Hussein Obama

That is the last support I will ever show for him to hold public office.

He trashed Trump non-stop for 17 months.

He trashed Trump’s policies non-stop for 17 months.

He’s a globalist GOPe man. What in the sam hell has gotten into FReepers in the last few days.

Against all odds we got Trump elected, and now were tossing manure on his administration with both hands.

Folks, man up!

I so agree with you. Why did people vote for Trump if they didn’t trust his knowledge and his judgment.

Just let the man do the job we elected him to do. Let Trump be Trump :) So far he’s done pretty darn good.

Romney is both a back stabber and an ideological globalist. He’d be baaaad as Trump’s SOS.

Or perhaps it’s Trump who’s worming his way into the GOPe?

Given the the GOPe is entrenched, it is folly to ignore their existence. Regardless of what we would like to see, you cannot simply plug our ideal administration into the machine and expect it to work well.

Square peg - Round hole sort of thing. I mean, look at what they’re trying to do to Bannon.

AFAIC, his other picks have been pretty spot on. So, for the time being, I’m going to sit back and observe. Not like I can do much more at this point anyway.

I agree Priebus is different than Romney, and I do appreciate the tough position he was in trying to support the nominee while at the same time doing his best to unite the party. That was no easy line to walk and I have some admiration for Priebus because of it.

That said, the GOPe appointees are starting to “accumulate”. Nikki Haley is now the third. Its a trend that is unsettling to many Trump supporters who thought Trump wanted to drain the swamp.
