NEW YORK The World Health Organization wants to eliminate artificial trans fats from the global food supply and has a step-by-step strategy on how to do so by 2023.
The organization launched a new initiative in hopes of helping countries kick the trans fat habit.
The artificial fatty acids are made when vegetable oil hardens in a process called hydrogenation and are used in everything from fried foods to snack foods and baked goods.

I thought libs liked trans things.
I’m no great fan of the WHO, but trans fats cause real problems.
They’re a frankenfood that should have never been recognized as safe. They’re extremely rare in nature and have never been a significant part of the diet for any species on the planet.
They’re structurally the same as saturated fats, but they’re not. They end up in cell membranes, taking the place of saturated fats, but don’t react chemically the way they should, causing any number of metabolic issues.
But I don’t think we’re likely to see much of a benefit from a ban because the manufacturers have developed new processes to turn cheap industrial seed oils into shelf-stable fats that don’t involve hydrogenation, but do create new types of far that have never existed in nature.
What could go wrong?
Just what some poor character needs while starving in Somalia - a Nanny State lecture on proper nutrition.
Correct!
I wonder if they could use them to build bricks for housing construction. Just kidding. No wait. Could they?!
WHO?
We need to divorce ourselves from all foreign/One World organizations.
But they don’t name the trans fats.
And how many divisions has the WHO?
It’s so much easier and healthier to just eat fresh food instead of the garbage that trans-fats are used in.
What many people do not know is that trans fat content in food that is less than 0.5 g per serving may be rounded down on the product ingredients label to zero.
If there is “partially hydrogenated” anything in the list of ingredients, then the item contains trans-fats.
Good points. I agree.
“Once we ban trans fat, the rest of banning food will become...a piece of cake.”
YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHH
When people are starving, they aren’t going to care what they put in their mouths.
And that includes us.
Not to mention the obvious nanny-state issues with government regulating what we eat.
My problem with banning them is that this will be just a first step in controlling what you may eat and how much. Insurance companies will raise your rates just for eating buttered popcorn, or a gram over your mayonnaise allowance...
I dont think thats true. Thats like saying you cant eat poison mushrooms, so were going to ban all mushrooms.
Slowly there is growing recognition that government food policies have been disastrous. Its not a partisan issue. Bad science is bad science, even if it was settled 50 years ago...
Gee whiz...lot of content in that story.
They usually replace them with interesterified fats which are even worse.
Fats go rancid fairly quickly. The industry needs stable fats, unfortunately this is done through manipulation of the chemical structure.
Didn’t the government say for about fifty years that if you eat butter, your arteries would harden into licorice ropes, and that healthy margarine (trans fat) was the way to go? Sorry if I’m unimpressed.
Ban it. . .I need my government over-lords to protect me from myself!!
Yes and likely bland and/or boring.
I like foods that are not good for you. I am not a child that requires government over-lords to protect me.
I know what is healthy and what is not. I make a choice and the over-lords should not think for a moment that they control me.
