KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI (Fox 32 News) - The Kansas City Health Department threw away and poured bleach on food meant for homeless people.
The food was going to be distributed by a group called Free Hot Soup KC. The Kansas City Star said that the food, which included home-cooked chili, foil wrapped sandwiches and vats of soup, was destroyed on Sunday, Nov. 5, during a coordinated sting at several parks where volunteers had gathered.
The Health Department said the group did not have a permit and was putting people at risk.
"E. coli or salmonella or listeria can grow in the food," department director Rex Archer said. "And then you give that to homeless people who are more vulnerable, they will end up in the ER and even die from that exposure."
The mayor also agreed with the Health Department, tweeting that "Rules are there to protect the public's health, and all groups must follow them, no exceptions."
One of the leaders of Free Soup KC said they will continue to hand out free food, but will just do it on private property.

Another decision made by a flat assed desk jockey justifying his position.
We’re from the government and we’re here to help.
It is the same food they serve in their homes or at church dinner.
What is your problem?
Should have sent the food to Venezuela, they will eat anything including zebras.
“..One of the leaders of Free Soup KC said they will continue to hand out free food, but will just do it on private property....”
That’s the way. The Homeless will get the word.
Now we are getting at the truth of the matter... people must be dependent on the state.
Our church has had to upgrade facilities and implement food-safety protocols as mandated by our town Health Department.
It was an expensive PITA, but we are now compliant.
You are not doing the poor any favors by making them sick. If your intent is to help the poor, it is your responsibility to ensure that the food you serve is prepared safely, cooked adequately, and maintained at an appropriate temperature until it is served.
Of course, it is possible to do that without the bureaucratic oversight. But, in my experience, people do not make the effort until they are forced to do so.
The government... mucking up a responsibility of the church and community to take care of our own.
Our church bought a double wide to be the parsonage, and hired a contractor to create the foundation. When inspected it was rejected, and the church was required to lay another whole foundation.I joked that The Church's One Foundation, But the Parsonage Has Two
. . . and had to wonder if that was for want of strategically placed grease.
There’s one group of people we can thank for this type of government behavior: lawyers. Every single time something stupid happens, there’s a public servant with a law degree behind it.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity..............
And of course that can't happen at a health-department-approved place such as...oh, I don't know...Jack in the Box or Chipotle.
You were reading my mind :p
Izzy, I’m with you. We have laws like that here in California. What if someone died from donated food? Sentimentality cannot be Law, nor Intentionality trump science.
As Benito Mussolini, said: “Everything within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state”.
That pic is sad.. I could use the top guy’s arms as chopsticks :/
If a private group wishes to share food with people who choose to enjoy it, I think the sole requirement should be to post a sign ‘Food served here is not from inspected kitchens and may be dangerous. Public is warned that they are eating at their own risk’ - Let people make the choice.
Scant chance of food poisoning is not enough to trump people’s freedom to feed others, and I refuse to see governmental nannies over-hand wringing over such a minor concern.
