Congratulations! You must be very proud!
Not really. They want you to have good grades sure, and some extra curriculars, but they don’t really care about class ranking. It’s meaningless really. So you ranked 1st, out of how many, and how stiff was the competition? They don’t have the time or interesting in researching every single high school to see if being 1st there actually matters. Better to check out your SATs and recommendation letters.
“They want you to have good grades sure, and some extra curriculars, but they don’t really care about class ranking”
Right because now a lot of universities are using the”woke” agenda, i.e. skin color, sexual preference and gender identity to select prospective students.
No. Nothing about that is “now” or “woke”. It’s basic logic. Do you have any idea how many high schools exist in this country? Do you really think the valedictorian of “BF no where inbred redneck” is going to be as qualified as a middle of the class kid from Exeter? This is why SATs exist. To get a consistent measuring tool.
They’ve been trying to get rid of honor rolls and valedictorians for decades. In the 80’s in my tiny hometown on the western slope they hired a superintendent who got rid of the honor roll. The school district got rid of the superintendent at first opportunity.
That was then, before woke-ism.
“This is why SATs exist. To get a consistent measuring tool.”
But if you take competition and it’s reward away from kids what is their motivation to study any harder than necessary to get a passing grade and then have to compete for the SAT test?
To get smarter. To take AP classes and get college credit before they’re out of high school. Because they want to. Let’s face it the vast majority of the student body has no hope of becoming valedictorian and no interest in it. The handful of kids in each class with any interest at all are already driven. You’re either self motivated or you’re not. All the possible awards in the world don’t motivate the unmotivated.
I went to one of the top schools in the country. Regularly finishing top 5 in the national in Academic Decathlon, regularly getting a large percentage of AZ’s Flinn Scholarships. That school has never rated students. In fact most of the top schools don’t. They put the work into making all their graduates top shelf. On average graduates from my school have 1 year’s worth of college credits before they get out of high school. Ratings don’t mean anything.
