Here’s why automatic firearms aren’t practical in real life

You must have seen a movie in which the protagonists empties their entire magazine through automatic fire and hits the target every single time. And if you’re a fan of video games, you must have played at least one first-person shooter that made you believe that automatic weapons essentially turn you into a god of war. Unfortunately, that’s the literal opposite of what the truth is, as automatic firearms aren’t used like that in real-life combat, and here’s why.

Automatic fire is inaccurate In real life, if they have the option to choose their rate of fire, professionals like to stick to single-fire mode. Why? Because automatic fire is inaccurate.

What video games and movies don’t depict correctly is the insane recoil automatic fire causes.

--and while fun to shoot on a range, there's no place for full auto in police work--

Full auto has its uses. When ammunition is readily available, it is used to make the enemy seek cover and not fire back....suppression if you will.

I really did like when they adapted the M-16 to do three round burst fire. It really helped in combat situations to keep people from letting their adrenaline takeover in some situations.

If it comes down to defending my family and home, I don’t care about what is practical for the police force.

The Second Amendment exists so that We The People will have the ability to wage war against tyrants. Full auto could have a role in that effort.

I knew a cop whose department had a couple full auto’s. He said he had no idea why they had them.

Beg to differ as I was quite good with with an M240 back in my day.
Being 6’2”, 250 and in shape was a definite advantage.
7.62x51 works very well on lotsa stuff.

Full auto thins out a mob/crowd.

Other ways to do it? Sure. But its one way.

When government goons outnumber you 10 to 1 then full auto is a necessity.

...it is used to make the enemy seek cover and not fire back...

Yes, in 1991 Basic at Ft Sill we were taught to use automatic fire only for that purpose, such as in an ambush. During that training exercise, I was in charge of a squad that contained one Bozo.

We did great at being ambushed - although the squad panicked and froze I directed them to pour automatic fire into the hill we were being ambushed from. I had myself and others cover while the squad went back to the rally point, then they covered the rest of us going back.

Private Bozo did ok since he only had to run back to the rally point, then copy the others and pour withering fire into the hill. Next, I set up a perfect ambush for the next group with an excellent cross-fire on the kill zone.

Unfortunately Private Bozo got impatient and fired early against orders, causing the other group to surround and kill us.

I really hope that guy didn't last long after Basic. Probably not.

Properly used, full auto is not used to fire at a target, but to set up a wall of fire across the path of an advancing enemy.

Come on people. We should not get like our enemies. We do not need automatics. At least not now. The time could come. WE should not react to the fact that the left wants all our guns.

What video games and movies don’t depict correctly is the insane recoil automatic fire causes.

That is completely dependent on the weapon and caliber being fired.

M-14 firing .7.62 NATO (.308 Winchester)? Uncontrollable.

MP-5 firing 9mm Parabellum? You can write your name.

Back in the 70s before the EPA put an end to it, we deposed of spent fluorescent bulbs by throwing them overboard and shooting them up with our Thompson sub-machine gun. You really have to push down to keep the muzzle down.

There is only one draw back to three round burst if you let off the trigger before lol three round fire when you pull the trigger only what is left will cycle done that a couple of times, expecting three rounds and only one happens first time that happens throws you off and first thought is a jam

From “Saving Private Ryan”. American soldiers facing full automatic fire from German MG-42’s.

Yes full auto is effective.

It killed our Americans.

Like our enemies? How silly.
The RKBA shall not be infringed.
Whether it is “practical” or not is irrelevant. The Constitution and Bill of Rights say “shall not be infringed”.
