WASHINGTON — Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis., who announced last month he would not run for re-election, will resign from Congress early, he confirmed in a statement Friday.

Gallagher’s departure before the end of his term in January is another blow to Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and House Republicans, who have been struggling to govern and demonstrate stability this Congress.

Two sources familiar with the matter told NBC News of Gallagher's plan to resign early on Friday. The Wisconsin Republican then released a statement announcing that he will depart on April 19.

The speaker's office confirmed that Gallagher informed Johnson of his decision earlier this week.

Prior to his election to Congress, Gallagher served as a military intelligence officer for seven years, including overseas deployments in the Iraq War, and worked as committee staff on the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

It’s remarkable how much grief I’ve gotten on FR for suggesting that I consider military veterans to be unfit for public office. Here’s one more example to support my case.

And a former military intelligence officer should have even less public respect than lawyers and child molesters.

It will be the current house as it will occur before the new Congress is seated.

I don’t believe for a minute that with FAIR elections our side CAN’T win nation wide!!!

The new Congress is the one that will preside, not this one.

You are absolutely correct.

Not according to the Constitution.

Right.

Rush used to say the GOP acted like they were embarrassed and nervous about being in charge and were hoping to slip down into the old, comfortable role of taking potshots at the ruling dominant Dem Party.
He said Dems act like they are in charge even when out of office. Heads held high.

The GOP will have a one seat majority in the House in 4 weeks. There is no way this is not a coordinated plan which will eventually result in the Democrats having the majority before the November elections. They will then refuse to confirm Trump as President should he be re-elected.

It is the new Congress that gets seated that presides over this, not the current one. So as far as the Presidential certification, this is irrelevant.

“I believe it is the current Congress.”

The Electoral College does not convene until Janurary, after the new Congress is seated.

I have to believe that the early retirements are coordinated. We just don’t know by whom and to what end. Or whether blackmail or bribes are involved — or are the early retirees willing conspirators?

We are now one more early resignation, or takedown by other means, away from making Hakeem Jeffries the Speaker.

The House GOP has been ineffectual legislatively because we do not have a working majority. At this point you could not get the caucus to agree to turn on the lights.

The ONLY useful function at this point is control of the committees, which means the power to investigate, to force testimony, to issue subpoenas, to surface information, and to influence the news cycle. These things are important. The early retirees are about to throw that away.

Which may be the whole purpose of this exercise. The moment Jeffries picks up the gavel, every investigation of anything related to Biden, the border, drug smuggling, name your issue will come to an end. And the Garland DOJ will execute Operation Whitewash without a trace of accountability.

The final question is how much the dems can ramrod legislatively on a party line vote, given their willingness to break every rule in the book. They might even abolish the filibuster as the first step in a legislative blitz.

You should be happy about this. One of the uniparty objectives of this is more money for Ukraine. And, you’ve been one of the biggest cheerleaders of that.

Charlie Kirk

Rep. Mike Gallagher has announced he is resigning his Congressional seat effective April 19.

This is calculated. Gallagher could leave now, and allow his safe Republican seat to be filled quickly. Instead, he is deliberately leaving on a timeline that will leave it empty until November, leaving the GOP majority even smaller and making a Democrat House takeover a real possibility.

Gallagher is a traitor to his party and to the people who voted for him. What a spiteful, repulsive creature.

How can a new Congress address Electoral College or election issues related to themselves?

A new House convenes on 3 January of 2025. It will be whatever distribution of the new Congress that will vote on the presidency. The current House will have NO say.
