Tough call for any officer to determine if or not an individual is drugged or has mental conditions when a lot of drug addicts have mental conditions in the first place. Both of which often have unusual strength.
If or not the guy was a menace or not really isn't relevant, since he was argumentative and resisting from the start, then tried to run and also apparently got his arm loose and went for the officers gun.
Recalling also the fellow who called in saying this guy was acting and talking weird....adds to the defense of the officers as well for they also saw and heard this.
Your father was wise saying
“never attempt to flee or fight the police”.....this fellow would still be alive had he been instructed so perhaps.

There were only two officers who confronted him and took him down when he resisted....the others got there later. If drug overdose is suspected in our city the fire dept and the ambulance are both called as well as back up for the officers.
On that the family may have a peg to hang their case on as it would be criminal malfeasance for an EMT to do so.
My first thought, too, was “on the spectrum.” I’m surprised the officers didn’t pick up on that right away. Within seconds I picked up on that.
These are the kinds of stories that worry parents with kids who are socially awkward in some way. What happens when they become adults, still not equipped to handle encounters with the police.
He also said he was ‘talking’ and acting weird......the officers approach was “we just want to talk to you”...”No big deal”.....
It doesn’t matter. Some people want cops executed for the hell of it.
Just speculation, but I would guess that McClain was classified a ‘high functioning’ autistic by Social Services. He got a nice disability check each month and subvented housing and he could do the everyday minor tasks. His neo Ninja garb is typical of the foolish things these type mental disabilities cause. His tragedy was he crossed paths with ‘Juan’ who he freaked out. Juan sounded high also. Great country we have.
You teach them just as you would anything else.......We have a Autistic young adult now in our family...you can teach them about police just as you would other areas of concern. Take them to visit a police station to get familiar with them etc.
He was an adult man in his early 20's. We don't know for sure whether he was on the "spectrum"; we're just guessing here. But, obviously, he was capable of doing things on his own, like walking to the store to buy something.
Aurora is as close to a police state that exists anywhere...sorriest bunch of corrupt cops Ive ever had the displeasure of meeting..
Officers are required to investigate a call as this was.
The Blue Wall is very active on the FR. Craven excuses soon to follow.
I don’t know or understand all the details but it’s sad what happened to the young man.
Argumentative and resisting?? Resisting what exactly? Why were the police even bothering with him? Who cares if someone wears a ski mask and behaves oddly? There are no laws against that
My father told me never attempt to flee or fight the police. They will win whatever they have to do. So did my maternal grandfather and a couple of uncles.
My Dad was told by a Texas Ranger, who was his honorary GodFather. He gave me the same advice. Thank you Dad!
I told our sons and grandkids the same reality and to never argue.
My sons, later in private thanked me for that advice.
A grandson told me about an older wrestler on his hs team, who challenged and insulted a cop. He tried to take the cop down, the cop was a former all state wrestling champ. Besides an expensive medical recovery, he had a serious legal recovery that cost him a scholarship. He later apologized to the cop.
So it’s normal to wear a full ski mask while walking down the street in your town where most people are wearing short sleeves?
Yeah, if that’s normal for your area, I could see why that wouldn’t seem suspicious for any reason. For Aurora, CO, that’s pretty suspicious under those weather conditions.
Never mind the knee-jerk cop haters on this site.
The paramedics administered ketamine to sedate McClain, and an adverse reaction to the drug could not be ruled out.
