EMP attack would wipe out hundreds of millions of Americans
Unto the Breach ^ | 12 Feb 2009

Posted on 02/13/2009 7:30:24 AM PST by FatMax

Bill Forstchen, Newt Gingrich's co-author of several books is interviewed on Unto the Breach, and discusses Abraham Lincoln's bicentennial. In the middle of the interview, Bill mentions his research on an EMP attack, which terrorists could employ apparently at any time. Such an attack he said could wipe out most of the US overnight.

LOL Hundreds of millions is pretty much all of us unless we live an Nazi Pelousi's little world. Not sure an EMP would have much effect on flesh and blood anyway.

Shouldn’t there be a special site for Apocalyptic News?

But my Tweenage daughters would just die without their cell phones, they told me so.

Nobody is going to die from an EMP event. The man being quoted, if its an accurate quote, just killed his credibility.

Nonsense. A strong EMP can disable the infrastructure. It can’t “wipe out” an entire continent... unless the genius author has a different idea of what an EMP is. Hyperbole isn’t wise on serious matters.

I think you would be in more danger from the source of the EMP rather than the EMP itself.

Ok it’s overstated, but the point remains. Having a pacemaker (at 40 even) I’m not quite so quick to laugh off the threat.

An attack of sufficient power and coverage kills ALL unhardened electronics.

So ... no civilian comms like cel phones, most land line phones, radios. People are in the dark. NEwer cars won’t even start. Starbucks cash registers won’t operate. Anchor women and anchor men have no teleprompters.

Electrical grid largely shut down in the distribution lines and step down transformers. Ya got little or no civilian power

Food doesn’t get delivered. You can’t pump gas. You can’t call 911 (like that would help anyway)

The risks are a rapid loss of social order, starvation, collapse of economy .. pretty much a Charlie Foxtrot of Democratic proportions.

The challenge is getting that powerful EMP explosion as a series of airbursts or low earth orbit detonations OF SUFFICIENT POWER.

It’s a real threat. Maybe tougher to make good on than the threat-mongers will say.

Depends on the frequency. It only takes about 100 Joules to stop the heart, but like I said the source of the EMP would be a bigger concern for you than the EMP itself. The EMP would have a larger effect on non-hardend electronics.

It’d only wipe out your boyfriends on DU. Freepers generally wear anti-EMP suits to prevent this sort of catastrophe from affecting us.

A good number (not hundreds of millions) would probably die if in fact the EMP took out all the electrical grids. No power, heat, can’t start vehicles, no computers, cell phones...anything requiring electricity or using circuitry could potentially crap out. Internet porn addicts would most likely commit suicide, which would be a good thing! :)
