Poetry and Potpourri .... November 14-15-16, 2003

.................................................................

The Poetry Branch has been in limbo since the prior hostess left FreeRepublic April 15th 2003. We've since learned that said hostess has lost her posting privilege. That being the case, and Jim Robinson having given his ok, I wanted to renew the thread.

FreeRepublic is blessed with many fine poets, and we look forward to seeing their poems posted on FR once again. There were many non-poet FReepers who visited the Poetry Branch for the camaraderie; we hope they will return.

I would like to invite everyone to visit and relax at Poetry and Potpourri. Hopefully you will renew old acquaintances for chatting, sharing jokes, telling stories, posting cartoons, etc. Everyone needs a place to escape from the everyday news, make Poetry and Potpourri that place.

The Crystal Gazer

I shall gather myself into my self again,
I shall take my scattered selves and make them one.
I shall fuse them into a polished crystal ball
Where I can see the moon and the flashing sun.
I Shall sit like a sibyl, hour after hour intent.
Watching the future come and the present go -
And the little shifting pictures of people rushing
In tiny self-importance to and fro.

Roadhouse Blues

He sat on an otherwise empty stage, a solo star,
in a tarpaper sided roadside bar closed for the night,
and picked the worn nylon strings of his old guitar,
venting his silent rage in each note with all his might.

Soulful, reaching, dragging memories out of the very air,
as he played from his heart alone, and fought the demons of his mind.
Bittersweet the music and the moods it evoked in him there,
and set the night alive, to dreams he thought he’d left behind.

His audience was made up of Father Time and the Fates doing downtime,
and the music of that soul held a power that flowed out among the stars.
God and all the Angles had the tables on the left, tapping their foot to mark the time.
and the music left a better place for the passing of its roiling current in that empty bar.

The last haunting note was hanging in the quiet air of dawn for so long,
and the tired worn player sat his guitar down and stood listening to the night.
He thought he heard clapping, and he swore he heard the echoes of his song,
and as he slowly walked from that ancient stage, he wore a unseen halo’d light.

Friends

A friend is someone we turn to
when our spirits need a lift,
A friend is someone we treasure
for our friendship is a gift.
A friend is someone who fills our lives
with beauty, joy, and grace
And makes the whole world we live in
a better and happier place.

Crock Pot Chicken Paprika

12 pieces of chicken breast strips (not entire breast)
4 medium sized potaotes, sliced (skins left on by choice)
4 medium onions, peeled and sliced
1 cup of water
3 Tablespoons oil
Paprika

Place four chicken strips in the bottom of the Crock Pot.
Sprinkle with Paprika.
Then cover with a layer of potatoes.
Cover the potatos with layer of onions.
Add 1 tablespoon of oil.
Then sprinkle generously with Paprika.
Then start over with the four chicken strips and follow the steps above again for three complete layers.
Pour cup of water into Crock Pot (down sides so not to wash off the Paprika).
Cook on high temperature 6-8 hours.

*You can use different vegetables if you would like. Carrot slices work well.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. —Matthew 11:28

Looking to Jesus, my spirit is blest,
The world is in turmoil, in Him I have rest;
The sea of my life around me may roar,
When I look to Jesus, I hear it no more

Our hearts are restless till they find their rest in Christ.
