Anyone Interested in a FReeper Weight Loss and Exercise Thread? (Vanity)

A few of us were thinking of starting an on-going FReeper diet and fitness thread. It would be a place where we could discuss weight loss, diet, exercise, getting back in shape, encourage each other in our efforts to get healthy, and celebrate our successes.

Any fitness or activity level. 100+ pounds to lose or no weight to lose. Those who have lost weight and kept it off, please share with us what has worked for you. Maybe you love a certain activity, biking, skiing, rock climbing, walking, running, whatever, tell us about how it helps you stay in shape. Share your weight loss success. Just a place to exchange ideas about all things exercise and diet related.

Don't be shy! As Freepers we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers and more then a few of us could do with some exercise and probably a little weight loss.

NO VERBAL ATTACKS! NO NAME CALLING! NO BASHING! THE OVERWEIGHT! NO NASTY PICTURES POSTED! This will be a thread about getting healthy and no attacks will be tolerated.

Now I am starving. LOL. The only problem is that I cannot even have a treat during Lent until Easter because I made that broad "I will give up carbs for Lent". It has not been too bad. Tomorrow I will be able to have some meat which will help from today.

Hi retrokitten. I'd like to be on the list.

I have about 10 pounds to lose - the same ones I've been fighting for 10 years. I work from home and absolutely have to find the time to get some exercise. Not just for weight control, but for the horrific cholesterol problem I have.

Congrats on the Weight Watchers program and losing 35 pounds! That is wonderful!

The diet started to get really boring and really expensive.

I know what you mean. It is hard to be creative with your food when you grew up eating pasta, bread, and pizza. You have to relearn how to cook.

I mentioned this earlier, but wanted to reiterate it.

Pick up Protein Power Life-plan by Dr's. Eades. They have 20 years of research on the low carb diet.

They followed Eskimos that eat nothing but caribou for 8 months of the year. They looked at the aborigines in Australia and realized that when they became westernized, they developed all of the same health issues. When they went back to their native diet, the regained their health.

Also there is a yahoo group (similar to freerepublic) that is dedicated to the Protein Power Lifestyle. Once you join, you have access to 20-30 different text files with all kinds of recipes. There are 2 or 3 that focus on Low Carb eating for less money.

The quads were the worst. I did my usual squats, and could hardly walk for 4 days (I walked, but with great pain.)

Calrose is simply "sushi rice". Other brown rice is great, if you cook it enough, but not too much. You can get brown basmati, etc.

I just love the texture of the calrose.

Tell him to try to cut his carb intake. By carbs I mean avoid white flour (tell him to eat whole grain breads if he has to eat bread. Tell him to always check the carb amounts and get the one with the lowest carbs), regular pasta (tell him to try Dreamfields pasta it's delicious and tastes like regular pasta), white potatoes (try a small sweet potatoe instead), corn is a big no no, also makes sure he cuts sugar completely until its under control then he can limit it to maybe once a month under doctors orders of course. There are plenty of sugar free candies and icecream out there (but make sure you check the carbs because sugar free doesn't always mean low carb). Carbs are bad because they turn to sugar and keep your sugar levels higher for a longer period of time than regular sugar does. Breyers makes a low carb no sugar Heavenly Hash ice cream that is great. No fruit juices because they use too much fruit to make the juice. Tell him to try 1 piece of fruit instead of juice. Avoid watermellon (high sugar), grapes and pineapple are to be avoided. Those fruits are high in sugar. Most fast food including pizza is a no no because of the carb content. Its tough at first but the results are usually worth it. Peanuts are good snacks. Protein of course is good but watch the fat. MOST OF ALL EXERCISE! Walking is the easiest, and the best overall exercise and it doesn't cause any problems with your knees or ankles.

Thanks, areafiftyone!

Maybe you, and others here, can help with this dieting/health issue: Our family, both sides (including in-laws) has a high ratio of women to men. So, over time, and before my brother's diabetes was diagnosed, we (female "we") put hard and soft pressure on him to get his weight under control. His wife cooked from Sugar Busters and made a lot of healthy salads, etc. I sent health & diet emails I'd come across to everyone on my family list, although everyone (probably my brother, too) knew who the emails were really meant for.

In retrospect, I can see where we could be "perceived" as a bunch of nags....cause we were! We were relentless and no one knows how to make it up to him.

Now that he has to take diabetes medication, we're walking on eggshells around him so we don't segue into "I told you so" mode. Oh, we are a lovely bunch of hags, aren't we?

And, its not like we don't have issues ourselves, LOL!!!

"You see the mote which is in your brother's eye; but you do not see the beam which is in your own eye. When you cast out the beam from your own eye, then you will see (clearly) to cast out the mote from your brother's eye.

How do you make up for nagging someone over their weight, especially now that he is diabetic.

I've thought about signing up his email address with something that comes out daily as a reminder - like Denise Austin's daily emails - but I think it would have to be a male-oriented health site because I think he has shut out our nagging, haggish female voices on any topic - and rightfully so - better than the BOSE QuietComfort2 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphone.

Others have tried to involve him in light exercising like walking but even that is tough for him because he is so large he starts to have breathing problems. So, should we just lay low and leave him alone and take care of our own "motes" for a while, or should we somehow help him in his health journey?

TIA!

Our "women folk" are not usually so naggy, but everyone loves my brother so much and we see what bad choices have done to his health...

I haven't read the whole thread yet, so I don't know if swimming was suggested. It's a wonderful exercise especially for those who cannot do other types of exercise. Good luck to you.

Please add me to your ping list. I am on Weight Watchers, also. Actually, I am a lifetime member, who gained about 20 pounds that I've been trying to lose for the last month. Good luck to you.

I must say, short grain (Calrose) brown rice is a sublime joy!

Thanks for info. I will try it along with the Dreamfields Pasta that was mentioned on the thread.

Oh yeah I forgot to add that my current food plans include lots of vegetable juicing, unprocessed foods and herbal teas.
