Time for a new Free Republic Folding@home thread.
Our Free Republic team of 428 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 55th place (with 1,025 active CPUs - 106,120 completed Work Units and 20.25 million points).
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 30+ folding threads)
Welcome and PLEASE ask question so that your folding experience is as pleasant as possible.
Bump to all of our current folders, and to all those that want to join.

On or off the ping list, I am the guy.
Folding going well here - burned out a 400 watt power supply, so upped to a 550 and just a humming along.
Above all, remember that F@H is about finding a cure to the diseases that take the live and minds of our loved ones. Basic research is generated concerning the causes of Alzheimers, Parkinsons and BSE, among others.
F@H is an outgrowth out the Genone@Home project started back in the 90's. That project ended April 14, 2004 and Folding@Home is its offspring.
Folding@Home is a combination of Distributed Computing and Serious Math, sent out all over the world to about 190,000 contributors and 1,900,000 computers.
Check out these links to learn more about F@H:

Power supplies are becoming the weak link in systems. A 550 watt power supply is no longer a luxury reserved for file servers.
I still repair older systems with 135 watt power supplies that keep chugging along, somehow.
How does it work?: You download a safe, tested program (see link below) that is certified by Stanford University. It gets work from Stanford, runs calculations using your spare computer power, and sends the results back to the University.
Is it safe? Yes! Folding@Home rarely effects computer performance in any way and won't compromise your privacy in any way. It only uses the computing power you aren't using so it doesn't slow down other programs.
How do I get started folding for Team FreeRepublic?:
1.) Download the folding program from Stanford University's folding download page (Folding@home Client Download). Type in your desired username.
2.) Type in 36120 for the team number. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - if you get the number wrong, you won't be folding for team FreeRepublic!
3.) The third question asks, "Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service?" - We recommend you answer YES. Otherwise you will have to manually start the program after every reboot.
How can my computer help? Even if they were given exclusive access to all of the world's supercomputers, Stanford still wouldn't have as much processing power as they get from the supercluster of people's desktop systems Folding@home relies on. Modern supercomputers are essentially a cluster of hundreds of processors linked by fast networking. But Stanford needed the power of hundreds of thousands of processors, not just hundreds.
There's no reason to not get involved! It's free, easy, and you can know you're helping every minute without lifting a finger.

Are you running the GUI version of F@H? Often you can get more points by running the console version, especially if you have a login screen.
I used to use the GUI exclusively but have switched most of my systems over to the console version. I find fewer conflicts with games and can keep it running even if no one is there to log in.
Unfortunately the Ver. 4 GUI is the only one I can run -- Win98/ME.
If you're interested in tracking your folding machine(s) over the web, please Freepmail me.
Available features include:
Am curious . . . I have a pretty complex AMD DUAL CPU 2002 system 1 GIG memory; 1 Gighz; lots of HD storage etc.
XP-P OS . . .
but I also have problems routinely . . . not sure why all . . . I'm on 24/7 and so could probably contribute quite a lot. But I'm hesitant to complicate things further.
Anyone have a similar system or can anyone comment about the process complicating a complex system?
Mother died of Alzheimer's so I have more than one good reason to join.
I ordered a super hefty power supply when I had my system built in Taipei before leaving for home.
I seem to have a chronic memory leak. I use SYSTEM MECHANIC 7 to slap it back into shape 1-3 times/day. How would that problem relate to folding?
I have the excellent webshots.com screen saver and wallpaper. I don't want anything messing with that.
Please FREEPMAIL me that info. thx.
From what I see the best thing to do is to load the console version v5.04. Download it here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html
If you truly have a dual CPU system you could actually run two copies of F@H console. For now just run one copy and lets see how it runs.
The screensaver will slow down F@H but they will co-exist.
OK. Will likely load from your link an hour or two before I go to bed.
Thanks.
To be honest, the memory leak could come from M$ Winders directly. Make sure that you have all of the most recent updates from M$.
However I bet is that the screen saver is the culprit for the memory leak. They are notorious for ignoring proper garbage dump protocols and running roughshod over Windows.
Both are conceivable.
I have Windows update on automatic. Maybe I should scream at webshots and see what they say. I love it too much to give it up. Absolutely wonderful pics.
Thanks tons for your input.
Make sure that you pay attention to the following:
team number: 36120
User Name: Quix
Use IE settings: No
Use proxy server: No
Start as a service: Yes
Leave the rest as default suggests for now.
Reboot the system and head to bed.
In the morning take a look at the directory you are using and find a file called unitinfo.txt. That will tell you how far along you are.
You can also load Egon's monitor once the unitinfo.txt has been created.
Re: the memory leak, bring up the task manager cntl-alt-del, look at the process tab, look for anything with high cpu usage, don't worry about the System Idle Process it will show high when you have the task manager open. If there is a program using the cpu when it shouldn't, it will indicate use. If you can't identify the culprit program, write down the name of the process and find it through Windows search. It could be the screen saver, that's why I don't use them, I just turn off my monitor.
Also some of your erratic problems may be due to overheating, the internal fans can get dirty and lead to overheating. If you clean the motherboard fans, should be a fan on the cpu and the chipset, shut off the computer before vacuming the dust. My house is dusty and these fans can get clogged up quickly, especially during the winter.
FreedomGuru is right about the Task Manager. Its a good tool to see if something is stealing CPU cycles. Also look over at Performance to view other info on how your memory is being used.
Thank much.
Thanks again.
Didn't show up in the PROCESS or PERFORMANCE stuff on the task manager.
Mostly that seems taken up by the antivirus; firewall of SYSTEM MECH 7.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Thanks. Have printed it off.
Thanks.
Didn't find anything that way. Sys MECH 7 seems to be the thing taking most of the cpu time etc.
I blow things out fairly regularly in terms of dust etc. Doesn't seem to influence the memory leak thing. I keep the main side open all the time and have several extra fans going all the time.
Whose antivirus do you use?
Whose firewall?
I go out and get hardware firewalls that are built into the wireless hubs being made nowadays. Better security, able to protect a couple of different ways. Cheap, under $50 on sale.
Welll, I just installed it from that link . . . I hope I did it right. Typed in FR's team number. Double checked it . . .
How can I check to see that I did it all right? Not trying to be thickheaded if I've been told. Sorry.
Thx.
Hmmmm
We have MSN QWEST ADSL
I have SYSTEM MECHANIC VERS 7 FIREWALL AND ANTIVIRUS.
I also have Webroot antispyware.
Will keep on the lookout for a hardware firewall.

"but I also have problems routinely . . . not sure why all . . . I'm on 24/7"
The first things I think of are memory and HDD utilization/configuration.
Max out your system Ram, if you can, and try to get all the same high quality brand (same batch if possible). Don't do any overclocking until you're sure the system is running stable, then increment slowly.
Add a second HDD if you don't already have one. Configure a small partition at the front of the second drive, large enough for a system swap file and a little more. Configure XP so that there is only one swap file and locate it on that partition. (The XP default is to put a swap file in every partition.) This should result in a more robust system without as many problems. The second HDD uses a different channel to read/write and can do so simultaneously while read/writes occur on the 1st HDD. By limiting the swap partition to only the swap file, there is no fragmentation of it, which is the normal scenario and tends to really slow down systems over time - especially if one does not defrag the hard drives very often.
Routine maintenance should include deleting temp files, uninstalling or deleting stuff no longer needed and defragging the hard drives - all at regular intervals.
Hope that helps.
I have 5 or so HD's tons of GIGABYTES. A RAID setup etc.
Might setup a 4Gig Flash drive as you suggest. I haven't partitioned any of my HD's.
Thanks much.
RAM is maxed at 1 Gig because techs have been unable to get the other Gig slot to work for some reason.
"RAM is maxed at 1 Gig because techs have been unable to get the other Gig slot to work for some reason."
Sometimes memory sticks from different manufacturers won't work well together on the same motherboard, even if their specs are an exact match. Occasionally, sticks from the same manufacturer have the same problem and need to be paired with sticks from the same batch. Of course, there is also the chance that the problem is the slot on the motherboard itself or the timing of the North & South bridge chips on the motherboard. I'd do some research on the motherboard itself (support pages & user forums on the motherboard manufacturer's web site)- see if any one else has had the same problem and/or if there are chipset driver updates available. Make sure that the ram sticks match the boards requirements and try using only the brand certified by the MB manufacturer. After checking out the MB, you could try buying 2 new matching sticks as a pair and relegate the original stick to an older system, if one is available. (Corsair and Kingston have generally good reputations for memory.)
Sometimes, you just get stuck with an older MB that refuses to upgrade because of a flaw design in the North and South bridge chips or supporting chipset drivers and the manufacturer quit trying to overcome the flaw. :-(
"I haven't partitioned any of my HD's."
You could use Partition Magic to reconfigure one of the drives, but don't do it on a mirrored drive. The flash drive you mentioned would be the easiest and fastest way to reconfigure - just make sure it's always available or Windows will reconfigure itself by creating a new swap file on the main drive. Once you've reconfigured, don't forget to delete the old swap files on all the other drives and then defrag them.
"I have 5 or so HD's tons of GIGABYTES."
With large hard drives, defragging can really improve performance. Look for a good defrag program that will allow you to specify how to arrange files and blank space on the disk and research the best schemes for the way you use your system.
Hope all this helps.

Magnificently wonderful input.
thanks tons.
Will probably go the 4 gig flash route. Probably don't have current coins to do the mother board hassles on the added RAM. It's an ASUS motherboard and a dual CPU AMD ATHLON setup.
Greatly appreciate the input.
You're welcome.
Good Luck.

I run mine at about 85% capacity, and I switched to a 550 watt power supply after my 400 died. Much better.
You could always run it in non-graphical and see waht happens.
Not sure what you're saying about nongraphical.
Am not using the GUI on F@H.
But appreciate the suggestion.
I have a very over necessary power supply. Very hefty. I ordered the computer built that way in Taipei.

Thanks papasmurf for keeping folks aware of the team on the GetLoaded.com boards. I think we have well over a dozen active GL folders now, and some of them are now FReepers!
If you know the FReeper names of these folders, FReepmail me and I'll put them on the ping list.
Thanks to all of you for providing support and encouragement to the newcomers.

A decent case is designed to flow the air over the parts that need it and out of the box. Leaving the case open can leave hot spots. Getting a power supply with a big, high-capacity fan can help (some put the fan on the bottom of the power supply where there's room for a much bigger one), as well as replacing any case fans with better ones.
Thanks.
Appreciate the input.
I had a WU finish up at home about 8:30 last evening. It showed up on the F@H site by 10:00 but still hasn't shown up on Overclocking.
Evidently I have made it into the top 10% of all folders in less than 5 months. Sounds like a lot on inactivity to me.

Extremeoverclocking.com gets their stats directly from the Stanford data servers. Based on the number of posts on the F@H forum there may have been a hiccup in verifying the completed work units. I do not know why a credited WU would appear on the F@H site but not on EOC.
Folding Freepers has about 430 folders who have posted a work unit. Many of the names are my old carcasses from a couple of years ago.
In many cases you will see typos in names that are not caught for a while (see kluta_dohanger, etc). Another number are folks that folded for a while, got a new computer and never reinstalled F@H. A few have joined other groups or BOINCed themselves.
Then you have the small group that has been banned from FR, and they drop off. Hey, it happens both ways. Sometimes folks are banned and they keep on folding for the FReepers.
