Is Recession Preparing a New Breed of Survivalist? [Survival Today - an On going Thread #2]
May 05th,2008

Posted on 02/09/2009 12:36:11 AM PST by nw_arizona_granny

Yahoo ran an interesting article this morning indicating a rise in the number of survivalist communities cropping up around the country. I have been wondering myself how much of the recent energy crisis is causing people to do things like stockpile food and water, grow their own vegetables, etc. Could it be that there are many people out there stockpiling and their increased buying has caused food prices to increase? It’s an interesting theory, but I believe increased food prices have more to do with rising fuel prices as cost-to-market costs have increased and grocers are simply passing those increases along to the consumer. A recent stroll through the camping section of Wal-Mart did give me pause - what kinds of things are prudent to have on hand in the event of a worldwide shortage of food and/or fuel? Survivalist in Training

I’ve been interested in survival stories since I was a kid, which is funny considering I grew up in a city. Maybe that’s why the idea of living off the land appealed to me. My grandfather and I frequently took camping trips along the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the Smoky Mountains. Looking back, some of the best times we had were when we stayed at campgrounds without electricity hookups, because it forced us to use what we had to get by. My grandfather was well-prepared with a camp stove and lanterns (which ran off propane), and when the sun went to bed we usually did along with it. We played cards for entertainment, and in the absence of televisions, games, etc. we shared many great conversations. Survivalist in the Neighborhood

Delaware Legislature Passes Historic Eminent Domain Reform
Governor Markell Set to Sign Senate Bill 7

WEB RELEASE: April 3, 2009
CONTACT: Bob Ewing
(703) 682-9320

Arlington, Va.—For the second time in as many years, the Delaware legislature has passed historic eminent domain reform. Both houses of the Delaware legislature voted unanimously to approve S.B. 7, which will protect homes, small businesses, farms and houses of worship from the abuse of eminent domain for private profit. The legislation heads to Governor Jack Markell, who has said he would sign the bill.

“Delaware just shot to the head of the class,” said Steven Anderson, an attorney at the Institute for Justice who worked with property owners and legislators on the bill. “S.B. 7 is reform that should make everyone proud, allowing all Delaware property owners—from Brandywine to Bethany Beach—to keep what they’ve worked so hard to own.”

After the U.S. Supreme Court’s infamous decision in Kelo v. City of New London, which allows the government to forcibly transfer property from one private individual to another, Delaware became the first of 43 states to reform its eminent domain laws. Unfortunately, the 2005 legislation provided only modest reform, allowing eminent domain abuse to continue.

Nowhere was that more apparent than in Wilmington, where local officials authorized the use of eminent domain for private gain against 62 properties and 38 businesses, including Ed Osborne’s Auto Repair, along the Christina River waterfront. The City is threatening to seize the land of these successful businesses and hand it over to a private developer who promises increased tax revenue and jobs from the construction of luxury condominiums and upscale shops.

S.B. 7 makes several critical changes to current law that will better protect property owners from eminent abuse. It specifically excludes increased tax base, tax revenue and economic development from the state’s definition of “public use” and restricts eminent domain to its more traditional uses—things like roads, schools, parks and police stations. S.B. 7 will continue to permit the acquisition of property for public utilities.

Most important, S.B. 7 makes certain that property that sits in a so-called slum or blighted area or is unfit for habitation or abandoned can be taken by eminent domain only when it is a direct threat to public health and safety in its current condition. Local governments retain the tools to obtain the worse properties, but only when they are objectively bad. And in situations where a private party may develop or own such properties, the bill requires municipalities to provide “clear and convincing evidence” that the condemnation complies with the state’s new definition of “public use.”

Anderson said, “It’s refreshing to see elected officials do what’s right and stop the abuse of eminent domain once and for all. Delaware finally finished what it started four years ago and the folks who fought for this legislation should be applauded.”

“U.S. Department of Health & Human Services” subscriptions@hhs.gov

-——Inline Attachment Follows-——

Dear Friend,

The rising cost of health care is crushing families, business, and government. President Obama is working with Congress to enact urgently needed health reform this year, and every American has a stake in the outcome. On Wednesday, April 8, from 10 am to 12 pm ET, a diverse group of those stakeholders, from businesspeople to insurers to health professionals, will come to the White House to share their views with Counselor to the President and Director of the White House Office of Health Reform Nancy-Ann DeParle.

This Health Care Stakeholder Discussion is part of a continuing series of conversations that began last December, when roughly 30,000 Americans took part in 3,200 Health Care Community Discussions around the country. The stories of Americans across all walks of life will play an important role as the President and Congress work to enact legislation that lowers cost, guarantees that people have a choice of doctors and health plans, and assures affordable, quality health care for all Americans.

Please visit

MY Quick Question
Should an elected representative reflect the will of their constituency?<<<

Are you taking ‘happy pills?’.

Yes, the elected one should vote as the people want him to, no he won’t, he will vote as the ‘leaders of his party and holders of the hog trough, so direct’.....

My opinion of course.

FDA: Routine Tests Uncover Listeria Contamination in Strubs Norwegian Style Steelhead Salmon
Agency warns consumers to avoid eating product

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned consumers not to eat Strubs Norwegian Style Sliced Smoked Steelhead Salmon in 300 gram packages because of potential contamination with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. L. monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause serious illness and death.

Distributed by West Side Foods Inc. of Bronx, N.Y., the smoked steelhead salmon was imported from Canada, and 13 cartons were sold to three kosher retail stores in New York and Maryland.

The Strubs brand Norwegian Style Sliced Smoked Steelhead Salmon was distributed in cartons containing vacuum-packed 300 gram packages bearing UPC code 0 71217 69997 4, registration number “0609”, and stickers with a code date of 03MA09. There is no production date on the individual packages. There are 24 individual-300 gram packages per carton.

The FDA urges consumers who have purchased the Strubs product to dispose of the product in a safe manner and wash their hands thoroughly after handling the product.

The contamination was discovered by the FDA and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency during routine testing.

Listeriosis, the illness caused by L. monocytogenes, can be serious and sometimes cause fatal infections in young children, frail, or older people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may experience only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.

No illnesses have been reported to date from the Strubs product. However, if individuals have experienced any of the symptoms listed, they should contact their health care provider.

Consumers also can report problems to their FDA district office http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/complain.html to FDA’s Emergency Operations Center (301) 443-1240, or to FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) Adverse Events Reporting System (CAERS) at (301) 436-2405 or e-mail at CAERS@cfsan.fda.gov.

SCHEME PURPORTEDLY ANNOUNCING A MILLIONAIRE CONTEST

04/07/09—The IC3 has been alerted to the circulation of a fraudulent e-mail, purportedly from The Oprah Winfrey Show, notifying recipients of their nomination for the “Oprah Millionaire Contest Show.” To participate, recipients are requested to mail their contact information such as full name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address; however, no mailing address was provided. Verified contestants are then required to purchase airfare and a ticket to attend The Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as complete a forthcoming contest form containing personal questions. The contestants are then promised a seat for The Oprah Winfrey Show in April and asked to provide their responses to the personal questions for a chance to win a million dollars.

Consumers always need to be alert to unsolicited e-mails. Do not open unsolicited e-mails or click on any embedded links, as they may contain viruses or malware. Providing your personally identifiable information will compromise your identity!

Individuals who receive such e-mails are encouraged to file a complaint at www.ic3.gov.

WORK-AT-HOME SCAMS

02/04/09—Consumers need to be vigilant when seeking employment online. The IC3 continues to receive numerous complaints from individuals who have fallen victim to work-at-home scams.

Victims are often hired to “process payments,” “transfer funds,” or “reship products.” These job scams involve the victims receiving and cashing fraudulent checks, transferring illegally obtained funds for the criminals, or receiving stolen merchandise and shipping it to the criminals.

Other victims sign up to be a “mystery shopper,” receiving fraudulent checks with instructions to cash the checks and wire the funds to “test” a company’s services. Victims are told they will be compensated with a portion of the merchandise or funds.

Work-at-home schemes attract otherwise innocent individuals, causing them to become part of criminal schemes without realizing they are engaging in illegal behavior.

Job scams often provide criminals the opportunity to commit identity theft when victims provide their personal information, sometimes even bank account information, to their potential “employer.” The criminal/employer can then use the victim’s information to open credit cards, post on-line auctions, register websites, etc., in the victim’s name to commit additional crimes.

If you have been a victim of Internet crime, please file a complaint at www.ic3.gov.

Now you know why there are no comments, no way will they allow the common man to ask real questions.

The word ‘stakeholder’, means part owner [to me], as in a race horse or gold mine, is that the message he wanted sent?

Guess we are the stakeholder, for we will pay for it.

Or is the ‘stake holder’, the one holding the stake that he will drive in our country?

The one that will ruin it for all time.

Schindler’s list discovered in Australia
By JPOST.COM STAFF

http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1238562921626&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

A copy of the list compiled by German businessman Oskar Schindler which
saved hundreds of Jewish workers during the Holocaust has been
discovered by a researcher at an Australian library.

Workers at the New South Wales State Library found the list containing
the names of 801 Jews, as they sifted through boxes of manuscripts of
Australian author Thomas Keneally.

The 13-page document, a yellowed and fragile carbon typescript copy of
the original, was discovered between research notes and German newspaper
clippings in one of the boxes, library co-curator Olwen Pryke said
Monday, according to AFP.

Pryke said the list was “one of the most powerful documents of the 20th
Century.”

“This list was hurriedly typed on April 18, 1945, in the closing days of
WWII, and it saved 801 men from the gas chambers,” she added. “It’s an
incredibly moving piece of history.”

She said the library had no idea the list was among six boxes of
material acquired in 1996 relating to Keneally’s Booker Prize-winning
novel, originally published as “Schindler’s Ark” and which was the basis
for the Oscar-winning 1993 film, Schindler’s List.

Pryke said that Schindler actually compiled a number of lists as he
urged Nazi bureaucrats not to send his workers to the death camps.

She said the document found by the library was given to Keneally in 1980
by Leopold Pfefferberg - named on the list as Jewish worker number 173 -
when he was persuading the novelist to write Schindler’s story.

FABIAN SOCIALISTS GONE WILD

By Joe Kress

March 31, 2009

NewsWithViews.com

http://www.newswithviews.com/Kress/joe138.htm

The Fabian Society (founded January 4, 1884), began as a socialist movement
in Great Britain. Its purpose is to accomplish a social democracy to
transform societies and governments not through revolution but gradually. It
is the foundation of the British Labor Party and subsequently it forced the
decolonized of the British Empire. The Fabians favored gradual incremental
change. The name was taken from the Roman Republic General Fabius Maximus or
Quintus Fabius Maximus the “Cunctator.” The meaning of which is “The
Delayer.” His, as indeed is the Fabian winning strategy . harassment and war
of attrition rather than head on battles against his enemy, Carthage, whose
defender was Hannibal Barca.

The Fabians favored nationalism of land, believing that rents collected by
landowners were unearned. The founders of the Fabian Society were Sidney and
Beatrice Webb (founders of the London School of Economics). Together, they
wrote studies on co-operative economics applied to ownership of capital as
well as land. The meat of their message was a minimum wage, creation of
socialized medicine, and the abolition of hereditary peers. They favored a
British Empire imperialist foreign policy as a conduit for Liberal
Internationalism and reform and a welfare state modeled on the Otto von
Bismarck Social Legislation and a national education system where its
classrooms are the future battlefields of the Empire in which commercial
prosperity are to be fought.

Famous Fabians: H.G. Wells, George Bernard Shaw Leonard and Virginia Woolf,
Ramsay MacDonald, Jawaharial Nehru, writers Harold Laski and H. Tawney,
G.D.H. Cole, Bertrand Russell who resigned because he believed the
Socialists (Fabians) in the leadership government role against Germany would
lead to war. These are just a few names of the past. The more recent rolls
are composed of 5,810 individual registered members (2004).

It is more than apparent that the model of United States public education
was taken out of the Fabian textbooks and from the designer of U.S. public
education, Fabian Socialist John Dewey’s MATRIX for public education. It’s
the same as the British counterpart, the Bismarck model, where children are
really property of the state and trained to serve the state, but never to be
provided an education meant for men of letters, their betters. The result of
this socialist mantra is educational failure, dooming down students to the
levels of uselessness within a modern society. The Bush Administration,
knowingly or not knowing, greatly assisted the Fabians through the
underfunded “No Child Left Behind” directive centered on the concept of
minimalism based on tests set to meet universal standards and nothing more.
Numerous tests are administered to determine improvement of the child, but
in reality the children are taught to pass the tests and not necessarily
understand the concepts behind the questions.

The dropout rate of high school students averages 50%. The United States has
become the dumping ground for illegal alien families who speak only a
foreign language, are mainly hard working peasants who fill jobs as laborers
and displace legal Americans because they work for less, ask no questions,
have no benefits and are afraid to report abuse by their employers. A large
number of these children attend the public schools destined to be failures
within the system.

[Continued, written with an understanding of all that is going on and the ‘dots’ that fill in the picture..........granny]

Free tools to save money on printing

My frugal tendencies are legendary! I don’t like to spend more money on things than necessary. And I try to prevent waste whenever possible.

Printer ink is my pet peeve. The cost of ink is simply outrageous.

Of course, printer manufacturers want you to buy lots of ink. But you should listen to your wallet, instead.

Fortunately, you don’t need to stop printing. You just need to be a bit smarter about what and how you print.

I have a few great tools that will help you reduce your printing costs. For example, you can eliminate ads from Web pages. Or, use a special ink-saving font.

You can find out more about these programs at my site. Then, click the download links to get the tools for free!

Hitler said his grandchildren would rule the world, and if they are not blood related, they are surely mentally related.
