Previous studies have suggested that Indonesia's Toba supervolcano, when it erupted about 74,000 years ago, triggered a 1,000-year episode of ice sheet advance, and also may have produced a short-lived "volcanic winter," which drastically reduced the human population at the time.

We used to live in a LAKE! We'd have to have to get out of the lake at six o'clock in the morning, clean the lake, eat a handful of hot gravel, work twenty hour day at mill for tuppence a month, come home, and Dad would thrash us to sleep with a broken bottle....

We used to 'ave to get up out of shoebox at twelve o'clock at night and lick the road clean with our tongues. We had two bits of cold gravel, worked twenty-four hours a day at mill for sixpence every four years, and when we got home our Dad would slice us in two wit' bread knife.

After we all fell out of the tree, we moved under a bridge. We still live there in fact, but now we have basic cable and Internet access and it hasn't rained in so long that the mud has dried up and no mosquitoes to speak of. Things are pretty good actually.How about you?

RIGHT.

I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of boiling hot sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, nine days out of the week, and PAY the mill owner for PERMISSION to come to work. We'd walk on red hot shards of broken glass in bare feet to get home, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us, and dance about on our graves, singing Hallelujah!

But you try and tell the young people about that, and they won't believe you.

This eruption will continue to grow in volcanologists' imaginations...

I read this as a lessening of the significance of the Toba eruption.

And then there's the toga eruption but that came later.
