The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
You might have to cull a few. Nice problem to have. LOL
Oh man. We lived in Vermillion one year. Hated it! Snowed in October and stayed on the ground till end of June. After the first snow, it never melted till late spring.
Snow piled up high on both sides of the roads, and drifted up to the windows on the trailer. I went out to the mailbox one morning and the snow was up to the bottom of the box.
Just as I reached in to get the mail, I broke through the crust and sunk in up to my shoulders almost.
Missouri winter sure looked great after that.LOL
Of Course!
I like that greenhouse. What is the size of it and how often do you have to recover it?
Pre-sprouting my Revelation sweetcorn on the kitchen counter today. It will go into Styrofoam cells when I see some root growth and into the greenhouse until the end of May. then it will get planted into the garden because our soil is still to cold to direct seed
That stand is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
I did go to our local organic/natural foods store, and buy some soft neck specifically for planting, as a back-up plan.
It will still go in, even though the German is finally sprouting; but the idea was that if the hard-neck/porcelain failed, at least we would have some garlic. We want a full-flavor, semi-hot garlic, and Gilroy just doesn’t do it: too mild.
LOL! In the 1950s, driving down from the Mount Shasta Ski Bowl, an older (20-ish) brother jumped out of the car when Dad had to stop near a switchback, & said he’d meet us on the road below. He was buried well over his hips before he’d taken a dozen steps. Had to use a rope to haul him out.
Fortunately, Hot Springs is in the “banana belt”, with pretty much the warmest winters in the state; and even the worst & coldest snows rarely stay on the ground more than 3-4 weeks or so.
I suspect “Gilroy Garlic” is now coming from China as it did a couple of years ago. There is not a lot of garlic grown near Gilroy any longer due to disease in the soil so they have it farmed in the Central Valley for years. We still have 3 bags of last years crop in the freezer which seems to improve the flavor.
Interesting. I did not know they had a banana belt.LOL
Thank you both for the links. I’ll browse through them this evening. I appreciate it!
The trees I ordered got here at the same time as our latest snowstorm. We’ll see what the weather’s like tomorrow, I might have to keep them in a bucket until I can plant.
I checked on my tomato cutting between flurries, it’s still green. Hopefully it’ll make it through the night. A few days ago I had to rearrange the bags in my homemade wall-o-water. They had slumped over and were blocking the vent hole, my poor cutting was getting cooked!
The strawberries have decided that it’s spring, no matter what the weather does! They’re pretty hardy, so they’re growing in spite of the cold snaps.
Not much else to report, just waiting for warmer weather.

I see people stating in the garlic forums that christopherranch is processing and repacking garlic from China under a differnt name not true i hope .

Hi Mike: Christopher Ranch does not process or repack Chinese garlic.
____________________________________________________________
Christopher Ranch is the garlic we buy, but I’m not be at all surprised that some “growers” would cash in on the Gilroy name by repackaging Chinese garlic. “Packaged in USA” vs “Product of USA” vs “Grown in USA” vs “Distributed by XYZ Produce, Gilroy, CA, USA”, all have different legal meanings. Only “grown in” is safe, assuming no fraud involved.
Lows of -5 to -15 for about 3 weeks, vs lows of -20 to -30 for 6-8 weeks; and snowfall usually in inches, rather than feet, at a time.
All is relative.
We had to cover up some of the little trees we just transplanted. Down to freezing tonight. The first day of spring was March 20, but someone forgot to tell Mother Nature.LOL
If you buy bagged topsoil be aware that it’s most likely full of weed seeds. Most of them will be annoying but harmless, but dad used bagged topsoil in the front garden and we ended up with poison ivy amongst the strawberries!!!
Jeepers. Creepers. Where’s the global warming when you need it????????

I’m not getting top soil with weeds because I cannot bend over and pull weeds and refuse to do it and kill myself, wouldn’t be able to walk the next day or the day after that. I’m not kidding, I cannot do that and that’s where I draw the line. Thanks for telling me that ‘cause I’m not doing it.
If I have to buy the good potting soil and use only that on top of that ground cover to grow plants, then that’s what I’ll do.
Roma tomatoes are in our little greenhouse and will occupy half of one of our raised beds. The Romas are a key ingredient in Pasta Putantesca.
Holycow! Thanks for the update!
