Each poo is a time capsule to the dawn of the dinosaurs.

A gigantic "communal latrine" created at the dawn of the dinosaurs has been unearthed in Argentina.

Thousands of fossilised poos left by rhino-like megaherbivores were found clustered together, scientists say.

The 240-million-year-old site is the "world's oldest public toilet" and the first evidence that ancient reptiles shared collective dumping grounds.

The dung contains clues to prehistoric diet, disease and vegetation says a study in Scientific Reports. Continue reading the main story

This occurred in the Triassic, just as dinosaurs began to appear. This particular type of animal was a mammal-like reptile that was a plant eater.

Llamas and alpacas do this. Horses can actually be trained to do this, too. Leaving poo and urine in one particular place isn't that uncommon in the animal world.

Llamas and alpacas do this.

That makes it very easy to collect for my compost pile. I take advantage of that habit.

I don't have a shovel and bucket scaled for dino poop, though.

Do you suppose progressives could learn this important skill?

A sheet of volcanic ash has preserved the ancient dung piles "like Pompeii", said Dr Fiorelli.

Argentina has 39 active volcano...

I wonder if one of them erupted 240 millions years ago ?
