But based on the excavated evidence, the citys Bronze Age heyday seems to have nevertheless come to a sudden, inexplicable end toward the end of the Middle Bronze Ageand the ancient city became a relative wasteland for 700 years, for the most part void of human habitation. The comparatively paltry or lack of Late Bronze Age material is a testament to this, with the same pattern shown in the smaller, nearby sites. A strange development, thinks Collins, for a great city-state that flourished even through the catastrophic climate changes that arguably led to the collapse of the great cities of the Levantine Early Bronze Age around 2350 BCE. Collins is hoping that further research and excavation may shed more light on this mystery.

It was the worldwide demand for salt that made them their money.
Some biblical scholars argue that this was the site of Sodom. Other archaeologists disagree.

That’s not unusual. Books of the Bible/Torah written based on oral folklore passed down through a dozen or more generations later should never be trusted as the absolute truth.
Added for the leftist version of clarity.
Inexplicable?
I think one of the pics was either a kudu skull with horns or a kraken.
Omigod, beware of the kraken.
Velokovsky was ahead of his time. Most of his presumptions have proven correct.
or Baphomet
Have you seen the TV documentary about the theory it was an air-burst from a asteroid that was tracked by an ancient astronomer and recorded on a clay astrological chart found in the region now known as Iraq?
They also connect the asteroid to one that sheared off the top of a mountain in Austria on its trajectory south toward the Levant.
Very cool info in that documentary. Speculative, but with some physical clues that support it.
Baphomet.
Now there’s a name I haven’t seen in quite a while.
When Saddam Hussein drained the Iraq Marshes, a 2 mile diameter depression was found, suggesting a bolide strike. Couldn’t find if any recent work has been done to verify origin because of warfare. At any rate, one suggestion is that it is from around 2200 BCE, which is just about what this article suggests. Lots of civilizations fell apart around this time. There could have been more than one event, including one or more bolide strikes, a Tungusku level air burst, etc.

I ran across an account of the search for the Wabar meteors in an older National Geographic. Although the age does not seem to be connected to either Sodom or the Iraq Marshes, the story the author was told is that this fall destroyed a city for its wickedness. I guess if God would destroy something this way it must because of the wickedness of the people.

yet the ancient greeks did the same and we see the same in the netherlands etc. today
In mid-September, I asked Dr. Collins and Phillip Silvia the question whether the possible bolide strike in Iraq and over Jordan could be part of the same event. They smiled and said the direction of the strike is the same (approach from the southwest is what I think they said (either that or southeast)), but the timing between the events was probably a 500 to 300 year difference. But I could tell they are very interested in the Iraq crater.
the documentary I was referring to posited a different trajectory. If it sheared off the top of a mountain in AUSTRIA and then finally culminated in pieces falling over the Dead Sea it would have been traveling in a NW to SE direction I think. They had a potential time on that dip to earth I think that would have coincided with the chart on the clay tablet found in modern day Iraq.
And that was the direction portrayed on the clay tablet. I think they even had a date of the event from the astrological charts of the stars marked on the tablet.
I was fascinated by the recreation of events that apparently could be dated—and which might have also explained the Dead Sea strikes by fiery bits of the debris.
Wish I had more info on how to find the documentary, but I watch so many of these shows that I can’t keep them straight.
