My brother e-mailed me this early this morning. I had no idea why. I deleted the e-mail after about 5 seconds listening to the horrible sounding song on YouTube. Had no clue it was some sort of strange Thanksgiving tradition.
Fond memories of youth. We always felt special when songs mentioned something about Massachusetts. And for those of us who grew up there, there’s nothing like Thanksgiving in New England. Package that up for us with some humor and beat, and you’ve a winner.
Interesting interview overall. Love the fact that it’s about music first and foremost for him, and that he thumbs his nose at being put in a box.
The comments about why he registered as a republican are...thought provoking...and could provoke different thoughts today than they might have 20 or even 10 years ago...especially the part about “guilt by association”.
till I Said, "And creating a nuisance." And they all came back, shook my hand, And we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing, Father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the Bench. ..."
Great stuff
He wrote some good ones.
I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison. And I went to pick up her in the rain. But before I could get to the station in my pickup truck. She got run over by a damned old train. {You never even called me by my name aka The perfect country and western song Steve Goodman & David Allan Coe.}
One of my personal Steve Goodman favorites is ‘A Cub Fan’s Dying Request’. It is really an anthem for the poor Cubbies. Sadly, we lost Mr Goodman to leukemia in the autumn of 1984. Loved his music.
Several months later, a windmill which had been near the garbage pile, mysteriously disappeared from the property. It had been disassembled over night, and carried away, piece by piece. The neighbor was justifiably angry, as there was some value to complete, but unused, windmills as collector's items and antiques. I found out many years later, that the same person who dumped the garbage was the one who stole the windmill. He got the last laugh.
The lottery was at Christmas, 1969. One of the first things coeds used to ask about a new guy was his number. We would want to know if he was going to be around for a while. My college boyfriend’s number was 42. He was never drafted. Thank you for your service.......I hope you were treated decently when you returned home so many years ago.
Actually, I was about to become an Army officer when that number came out, so it was mox nix.
I volunteered for Vietnam. How dumb was that?
;^)
Littering is a misdemeanor, which doesn’t preclude being drafted. People got drafted with a lot worse on their record, especially during Vietnam.
Unless Arlo Guthrie was convicted of leading a convoy of garbage trucks to dump toxic waste into Lake Tahoe, I ain’t buying his story.
;^)
OK, OK, but does it make one unfit for military service?
Arlo did write his “conviction” into the “Alice’s Restaurant” narrative, so it was likely embellished somewhat.
And yes, he was `soft left’, not a hard-core pro-Soviet mouthpiece like his dad.
I saw it back in 1970 at the theater. A waste of time. The University students really went for it as the bookstore had several cartoon books of the movie, poorly drawn.
Actually, the poorly drawn cartoons were better than the movie.
The only thing memorable about the movie was the trailer shown a few days before, especially the scene where the camera moves away from what appears to be the cover of SGT PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND and all the characters are singing the theme to Alice’s Restaurant.
I distinctly remember a Tiny Tim character singing his heart out.
The song was very clever and very timely, but I remember seeing the movie and not being at all impressed.
Yes. You are right. And thank you for your service.
I have discovered that Arlo Guthrie’s lefty politics are pretty mild compared with others in folkie showbiz. It’s kind of a joke to him. He’s not a Pete Seeger or Joan Baez.
But his father Woody Guthrie!? He didn’t take up singing for the troops until the U.S. was firmly committed as an ally of the Soviet Union. His guitar (actually several) were inscribed, “THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS”. Socialism or death was Woody Guthrie’s ideology.
Anyway, have a happy Thanksgiving.
Or are we now supposed to call it “National Indigenous Peoples’ Genocide Day?”
;^)
Yes it is. Steve accomplished so much in his short life. He knew early that his years were limited and made the most of what he had. In addition to all the great songs he wrote he pretty much made John Prine’s career. Prine is a huge lefty, but it can’t be denied that he wrote a bunch of great songs.
