Star of David found engraved into an ancient Temple arouses bustle in Egypt

Egypt has recently been witnessing a great commotion following the archeological discovery of two Star of David engravings in an ancient Temple in the southern city of Aswan.

The Roman Temple, which dates back to the 3rd century B.C, is located in the Elephantine Island in Aswan.

Dr. Mahmoud Afifi, the head of the Egyptian Antiquities branch in the Antiquities Ministry, said that he noticed a stone with two Star of David engravings in the Roman temple.

Afifi accused the delegation of German archaeologists that has been working on the site's reconstruction of engraving the Stars of David into the Shrine's stone.

Afifi ordered the archaeologists to immediately remove the stone with the Star of David's engraving from the temple, threatening to take all legal measures against them if they would ever repeat such a move.

An Egyptian news site, Suezbalady, went even further, claiming that the two Star of David engravings that were found were drawn by a Jewish member of the German delegation, who wanted to vandalize Egyptian culture and provoke Egyptians.

The newly-appointed Egyptian Antiquities Minister, Khaled Anani, released a press statement Saturday following his visit to the Aswan shrine.

Anani stated that he had instructed the joint Egyptian-German group to submit him a scientific report about the two engravings found on one of the temple's walls. "The report will include a picture of the stone under discussion from the time it was discovered, to explore its archaeological repercussions without the two Star of David engravings, "Anani said.

"We will be aided by an expert of Islamic antiquities to understand whether the Sign of David was common in that early period", Anani announced.

I can see the Cheyenne mountain base from my window. I wonder if the stargate is still there.

It’s simply amazing to see how Muslims will go into great contortions of history to deny almost any archeological evidence of Jews existence—while at the same time acknowledging the Quran calls them ‘people of the book’ with a heritage that intersects that of their own.

what is more likely?

This is proof of a Jewish group - one that according to historians existed in Elephantine?

Or some “unknown” group hijacked the symbol around the same time as the Jews were supposed to be living there, and used it?

That’s about as likely as someone in Nazi Germany, hijacking the swastika and saying it means something else.

Why would anyone go to such extremes to “explain away” something that is on it’s face obvious?

Conclusion: Anti-Semitism

It has been known for a long time that Elephantine was a site of worship for some Jews in the early days of the diaspora, which would fit the Roman dating of this find.

They lived there for a while, then migrated further south to Ethiopia, where there was an ancient Jewish community that could shelter them. Legend has it that they carried the Ark with them, and kept it in a temple on Elephantine before taking it to Ethiopia, but of course, that much is just legendary.

No reasons to think that this is connected to Judaism. Wikipedia has a good article on the Star on David including its early use.

Additionally, you may want to check on Solomon ben Duji .. a fascinating footnote.

If they find an engraving of Charlton Heston then we know for certain the 10 Commandments and other stories are real.....
Somewhat related.

A few years ago I was giving an exchange student from Turkish Cyprus a quick tour of Denver. I pointed out National Jewish Hospital and told him it was the best respiratory hospital in the country. He did a double take and I thought his head was going to explode. How could the dhimmis be allowed to run something so prominent?

Islam began the 600s AD. In this instance the stone carving would predate Islam by around 900 years. But Jews/Hebrews were likely in Egypt well before that.

Why did the stars have a square or a triangle in the center. I am not aware of this as being modern Jewish usage. Anyone know?

It probably had something else there and was carved down a bit when someone added those kinda poorly executed carvings of the Magen David.

Carved down, but ancient or modern times carved?

Looks like an engineer’s elevation mark to me

The datum was carried forward to other locations to maintain the project level

Elephantine was a geodetic datum of latitude and meridian
