(Full Title) CALIFORNIA CITY TO GIVE $500 A MONTH TO ANYONE-BUY DRUGS, BOOZE, GAS FOOD-SOCIALISM WORKS!

DAILY MAIL: Stockton, California will become the first city in the country to participate in a test of Universal Basic Income, in which 100 residents will be given $500-dollars-a-month, with no strings attached.

The program aims to create a level of income that no one will fall beneath.

By providing impoverished residents a regular sum of money that they can use on anything they wish, be it food, clothes, gas, or starting a new venture, those behind the program believe it could go a long way to give people enough support to try out new ideas.

The program in Stockton, which was once known as America’s foreclosure capital, will see the program launched by 2019, and the payments will continue to the individuals chosen for the program for a full 18-months.

The Stockton UBI program has heavy backing from one of the wealthiest areas of the country- Silicon Valley, according to CNN Money.

The idea is, in part, to off-set the economic distress the growing automation industry is expected to cause to American laborers, as well as a way to potentially reduce poverty.

One of the backers for the Stockton UBI program is Facebook’s co-founder Chris Hughes, whose organization, the Economic Security Project, contributed $1 million to the Stockton initiative.

‘It is such a fundamental idea behind America that if you work hard, you can get ahead, and you certainly don’t live in poverty. But that isn’t true today, and it hasn’t been true in the country for decades,’ Hughes told CNN Money.

‘I believe that unless we make significant changes today, the income inequality in our country will continue to grow and call into question the very nature of our social contract.’

One-in-four people in the city of more than 300,000 live in poverty, with the median household income sitting at $49,271, compared to $57,617 nationally.

The city’s inhabitants are also largely minorities with 70 per cent identifying themselves as such.

Finland wrapped up their experiment with the Universal Basic Income earlier in the year. Once they established the ‘baseline’....they came to realize that you couldn’t make it work without massive taxation. In this case, $500 a month...it might be set low enough to develop for a while, until everyone whines that it’s not enough.

Wussy Socialists! 100 people out of 77,500 residents below the poverty line?! Wow, a whopping $50K/month...go big or go home...go for the whole 77,500 people. It will set you back a mere $465 million a year! May be a bit hard due to the whole city budget being $709 million, but if going Socialist, go Socialist for goodness sake!

Here’s the odd thing though. If you took this bucket of money that appears to be laying there, and got some jobs counselor hired to ‘lead’ people to the jobs market...got them drug-free so that they could pass the drug-test...then in this Trump market, they’d all be hired in 30 days and wouldn’t be talking about poverty.

Go look at the trucker market. Companies are begging for long-haul truckers who can pass the drug test. Everyone of these folks could be hired up if we sponsored their CDL costs.

This article really hits home for me as my family is from Stockton and my Father was born right next door in French Camp. I agree totally with your response that just giving them money has unintended consequences if not tied to a program to give them new skills and a path forward to better times versus handing out money with no where to go with it

I could see this becoming a “magnet” for folks in the Bay Area in homeless camps to migrate out that way to get the cash and then what??

Job Training and drug rehab programs that work as well as educational assistance will yield results for many, and some will just keep on grifting

I pray for better, I truly do...

I kinda wish that President Trump would stand up some type of program aimed at people over the age of forty with no real job skills, who are unemployed. As charged up as the jobs market is (down to 3.5 percent in numerous states), we need these people. There ought to be some way of a job-skills-training grant for 200,000 people a year, and get these people on the right path.

Rather than encourage more immigration, let’s just take the lesser-talented folks here already, and use our limited financial resources to do long-term good.

I have developed just such a program and it is not geared at the start for seat shiners, I have personally trained many people over years at a very high technical level in 2 weeks to a high competency It is not rocket science really

Vo Ed is my bag and I would love to help implement this and integrate other training courses to help people get on their Path in Life, not the one they are on currently

Millions need it and I have a lot of ideas and know how, this can be done!

Great post, thanks for the inspiration!

UBI STREETCORNER

Hand out UBI $1000 bills to sidewalk pedestrians!

Tax the money from the dark side of town.

Give the free money to the bright side of town.

Progressive.

Much better idea! Yep, $500./mo. would provide a lot of job training (in the case of trucker, the trucking companies even foot the bill for training).

I wouldn’t mind a program that gave anyone who showed up $500 for 50 hours of work a month. It would have to be supervised, of course. Never happen.....judges who destroy the nation would go nuts.

IOW, another dickwad who got rich by accident, who speaks in meaningless buzzwords and doesn't know math or economics, or even sociology. 75,000 split $1 million and get $13.33 per person. $3.6 billion would give the 75,000 who live in poverty $49,271 each. It would also cause the cost of living to rise. The barnacles getting the money would go right down and upgrade their phones and upgrade their phone plans; they'd buy nice cars; they'd be broke in 30 days.

A number of years ago, Stockton declared bankruptcy. I was in Stockton a few months ago, and I am thinking, some ideas are so stupid, only a Democrat could dream it up.

What is the criteria for obtaining this public largess?

How long will it run for (will ‘benefits’ be transfered if the beneficiaries DOA on drugs/booze ?)

Only for individuals who Voted Democrat ?

Relatives of a member of the city council ?

Does each $500 go to different people each month ?

Just some random bum sitting on a sidewalk surrounded (sanfranshithole style) by a pile of their own garbage, needles and bodily waste ?

Just 100 ??

How much you wanna bet the time to fill out the ‘study’ paperwork by public employees (and the politico spin doctors/media wonks) will cost (per month) about 5X as much as that measly $50000 ?

Mark Zuckerturd Net Worth = 77 BILLION

sells some significant fraction of the stock (his wealth is pretty much all ‘on paper’) and the rest will suddenly be “worth” half as much.

repeat until the stock disappears altogether (and all the stock investors in his company will after him with rocks)

(possibly there is some stock agreement blocking his selling any significant amount at onece and most of it for years)

F*cking a**sholes! It is logically impossible to TEST a UNIVERSAL income on 100 people! 100 is NOT UNIVERSAL! There is no way to get through to these people! This is not a test!

Of course, this “test” will succeed! Of course the recipients will tell warm stories of how they now can stop eating maruchan raman noodles and dry crackers. They will tell you how they now can use a new diaper each time, instead of rinsing off the old one.

Obviously this will be a “success,” and they will then move on to full implementation, which will also be declared a success. A short time later, they will be raising taxes to pay for this, but will not tie it to the new free money.

There is no way to have an intelligent conversation with anyone who believes this kind of thing will work.

Where is the $500 coming from? Most towns can’t meet their budgets on basic services.
