Kansas Prof. Apologizes for E-Mail

A University of Kansas religion professor apologized for an e-mail that referred to religious conservatives as "fundies" and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a "nice slap in their big fat face."

In a written apology Monday, Paul Mirecki, chairman of the university's Religious Studies Department, said he would teach the planned class "as a serious academic subject and in an manner that respects all points of view."

The department faculty approved the course Monday but changed its title. The course, originally called "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationisms and other Religious Mythologies," will instead be called "Intelligent Design and Creationism."

The class was added to next spring's curriculum after the Kansas State Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in its standards for science teaching. The vote was seen as a big win for proponents of intelligent design, who argue that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by a higher power.

Critics say intelligent design is merely creationism — a literal reading of the Bible's story of creation — camouflaged in scientific language.

Mirecki's e-mail was sent Nov. 19 to members of the Society of Open-Minded Atheists and Agnostics, a student organization for which he serves as faculty adviser.

"The fundies (fundamentalists) want it all taught in a science class, but this will be a nice slap in their big fat face by teaching it as a religious studies class under the category mythology."

Mirecki addressed the message to "my fellow damned" and signed off with: "Doing my part to (tick) off the religious right, Evil Dr. P."

"I've discovered that it irritates the heck out of liberals to call them liberal fundamentalists."

Liberal fundamentalists believe in utopianism where if you look the other way, bad things just go away. Case and point: appeasing terrorism and cuddling with criminals, especially those misunderstood and reformed deathrow angels. Not to mention economic destructionism and glorifying "just" mass murderers of history.

Similarly, religious fundamentalists who believe that their mythologies are 100% accurate, no matter what. It is their FAITH that explains everything, so anything else doesn't matter. Case and point: intelligent design, aka I can't grasp it, so it must be created by God. Earthquakes sent by God to punish people, and hurricanes just god blowing his nose.

It appears that some mods don't object to women who obsess on certain people, stalk them, disrupt threads, and generally behave like shrieking harpies, scolds, and harridans. Others will find such behavior to be absolutely repulsive. It's all in the luck of the draw when a complaint is made. Jim Robinson likes to run a good operation, and sooner or later, justice will prevail.

The first courtesy I learned was that you ought to ping someone if you are discussing them--to give them the opportunity to respond. I don't think it's a rule, though.

This is how that "virtual ignore" is used among the evo-gangup scenarios. "Don't post to me, I forbid it and will tell tales to authority, but I'll post any insult to you behind your back that I please. You can't defend yourself. Nyah Nyah." That's what the "Common Scold" was about.

Pretty good way to dominate the discussion without deserving to do so. I'd even call it a kind of rhetorical fascism.

"Similarly, religious fundamentalists who believe that their mythologies are 100% accurate, no matter what. It is their FAITH that explains everything, so anything else doesn't matter."

I'm glad you said it. They really are in the same boat as liberals in my opinion. If they had their way we would still be torturing people for blasphemous statements like suggestions that the earth is round.

So this is the prop? (post #103) I live across the state line of Oz. Last evening a local radio show was having a discussion about whether or not his apology was sufficient...

Unfortunately, I did not get to hear the whole thing so I am not sure what the callers had to say. Based upon what I did hear doesn't sound like this guy helped the evolutionist's cause.

I've noticed that as well. I will post something on one of these crevo threads and the evos will post to each other about my post and not ping me to it. Then if I want to see if anyone responded then I have to search the whole thread.

Overall I'd say that many (if not most) of the evos are just plain rude and their principle weapon is the weapon of ridicule rather than reason. I'm not surprosed that the religion professor in this article is an arrogant jerk as well. To top it off, posting a Darwin Fish on your school web site is a direct slam against Christians, as the Ichtuhs was an early Christian symbol used to secretly identify each other during times of Roman Government persecution. To post a Darwin fish is to express contempt for the Christian religion as a whole, as it is a desecration of a sacred religious symbol.

You are right, the evos tend to be facist while at the same time accusing their opponents of being the thing that they are. I suspect that the professor may very well be a poster on this forum. He certainly fits the profile.

Apparently your response to longshadow was a response to his or her response to RWP's response to my post, which of course makes it appear as if you are referring to me as a "women who obsess on certain people, stalk them, disrupt threads, and generally behave like shrieking harpies, scolds, and harridans.".

I have found that the rudeness on the crevo threads is quite one sided. The evos post to each other while ignoring completely the original post that they are referencing, then when the poster finds out that they are talking about him or her and responds, the evo will ping the mod and cry "stalker."

Your post to longshadow is yet another typical example of this rude behavior. You didn't ping Mamzelle, who I believe you may have been referencing, nor did you ping me which leaves the impression in those following the threads that you think that I am a "women who obsess on certain people, stalk them, disrupt threads, and generally behave like shrieking harpies, scolds, and harridans.".

If you don't like people responding to your posts, then you can always find another forum or perhaps stop posting to this one. Your reference to another poster as a "women who obsess on certain people, stalk them, disrupt threads, and generally behave like shrieking harpies, scolds, and harridans" is quite over the top. Especially when you have been informed by the Admin Moderator that that person is in no danger of being banned, as much as you would like it.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

fas·cism   Audio pronunciation of "fascism" ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (fshzm)
n.

  1. often Fascism
    1. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
    2. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.
  2. Oppressive, dictatorial control.

Seems to fit quite well with what this Kansas professor said and believes and the general attitude of the evos on this thread.

Personally I take the "fundamentalist" label as a badge of honor.

I have some very foundational and fundamental sets of values, beliefs, and morals. If that is wrong....I'll just continue to be wrong.
