There is an extensive brief on this issue posted in July last year which engages in a detailed description of how the statutory pattern and effective date clauses work.
Well, people are all over the place on that one. As far as why McCain did that, I believe he was doing it for political reasons, in order to not have it as an albatross around his neck during the election. But, “politically” Obama didn’t care one way or another to make a political gesture on the matter, as McCain did.
There was nothing in what Congress said that made it “legal”. It was just their “sense” of the matter, no law, nothing legal and nothing they said was binding in any court of law. So, it was nothing more than a political gesture that McCain apparently thought that it he went through that — it would make it so the issue wouldn’t be continuously hanging around his neck in the election.
McCain was *not legally required* to show his birth certificate, but he decided to do so, voluntarily, on his own, to one reporter, and then a few Congressmen. And that was about it. McCain never did show his birth certificate to the voting public, and McCain was *not legally required* to do so, anyway.
As far as what the right understanding and interpretation of it is, with all the disagreement I’ve seen on the matter, that will take a Supreme Court decision to make it final.
And I’m fine with that. Whenever the Supreme Court gets around to it, I’ll be interested in hearing their decision.

I found an old P22 typewriter font that shows a 1 similar to that on the Aussie BC (missing the _ at the bottom) but has a lower case l that matches everything else.

The 1961 Royal manual typewriter required use of the small L for No. 1 as there was no 1 key. All of the small l's in the Soetoro divorce papers were similar to the left small L below. The right small L has a squared flag that is longer and it has poor alignment.

That kind of article pisses me off. If you’re going to write it, back it up. Name names. They have names, write the column, then decide they won’t divulge the names. It’s a good story, but completely devoid of any facts. I’m tempted to email them and ask why they even bothered. grrrrrr

Oran’s Dictionary of the Law (1983) defines treason as: “...[a]...citizen’s actions to help a foreign government overthrow, make war against, or SERIOUSLY INJURE the [parent nation].” In many nations, it is also often considered treason to attempt or CONSPIRE TO OVERTHROW the government, even if no foreign country is aided or involved by such an endeavour.

I ended up finding a typewriter font called P22 that answered my question. The answer was yes. :-)

If you type in a 1 and a lower case 1 you will be able to see the difference with the P22 font.
