Thanks for the ping!

So... when it says a new 5000 frame WU will be completed Thurs Sep 22, year 2016 (3933 days) - it's just kidding, right? :o)

my computer is working on a 12,500 frame WU.

To calculate the time it takes to complete it, multiply thg frames times the time/frame (in my case it's 12, frames x 44 seconds/frame)

Uhm... that's not good. I guess there's no way to control what kind of WU's you receive?

It actually reads that this 5000 frame WU takes 1132 minutes per frame and lists an end date for the WU of:

17:39 Thr 22 Sep 16
3933d: 07h:42m:22s

I just completed a 12,500 frame like yours that took a couple days max... from 7 s per frame to 44 s per frame.

You must have a super computer. From what I understand, WUs get assigned based on processor speed, available RAM and internet connection speed.

The good news is that ranking is based on points (not WUs), so you'll a ton of points for that.

I think you can get more than 2,000 points for huge WUs. The smallest WUs I've seen only result in 15 points.

My problem (1st one) says 400,00 out of 500,000 steps done. It downloaded this one Dec 10. Even though I don't get a direct report of time per step, it looks like a step is taking about 1½ seconds.

I am using the console version, anybody know if a step and frame are the same (apparently not)? Is there a relation between frames (or steps) and the score? (I think this will vary per machine if a relation exists.) I'm wondering if my problem is going to help the team score any.

I surely never thought of my computer as a super computer. It's an Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz with 512 RAM... cable modem connection.

But I did solve the problem, if there was one as far as it taking 11 years to finish this WU... heh.

I quit the program and started it up again. Now it reads:
2m/9s per frame...
85/5000 frames completed.
WU end date: Fri Dec 23, 7days

Much better... my panic is over!

I am pinging some of the "experts" to your post, as I am not certain. I do believe a step and a frame are the same thing, but I am very new to this.

I'll demonstrate my naivete - is the console version you are using the one where you have an icon in your system tray in windows? You can double-click it to view the program status/working? If so, I guess I am using the console version as well!

The console version runs in an MSDOS window, with no graphics. The Windows version piddles away a little of its processing power by showing you that rendering of a molecule. Not much, but I'm cheap.

If the console version has a window of any sort, I haven't found it. I have just been looking at the the log it keeps.

You must have it set to run at boot. I kick mine up manually on the command line, hence the window. If I close the DOS window, it exits the program.

I suspect that the relationship between steps and frames varies depending on the particular molecule being examined.

In one of my current projects there are 500 frames, and the log shows a total of 500,000 steps. Another machine has 2062 frames, and is logging progress for a total of 2062 steps. In other words, it depends. :-)

Here's an interesting comment from the F@H Support Forum:

The word "Frames" is poorly defined in FAH. You'll find two different meanings, but in both cases, they are fractions of a complete WU. Depending on the speed of your computer, you'll probably complete a WU in one to several days. Then the results will upload and an new work assignment will be downloaded. A few hours later, the points will appear on-line under your name and team number. Each work assignment has a project number, and additional information about that project can be found on the Project Summary (See a link on the top of this page, or on the Stanford web page.) Detailed information is available in a file called FAHlog.txt. You'll find messages similar to the following: [05:04:24] Completed 0 out of 125000 steps (0) [05:42:19] Completed 1250 out of 125000 steps (1) [06:20:08] Completed 2500 out of 125000 steps (2) [06:58:02] Completed 3750 out of 125000 steps (3) and on the GUI you'll find a message saying Frames Completed: 3/125 which really means I've completed 3% of the current WU. Unlike the information shown on the GUI, most people would say this is frame 3, and the WU has 100 frames (one associated with each message). In your case, you probably have a WU with 25000000 steps and you've now completed 5000000 which is shown as 5000/25000 which is 20% completed. When it gets to 100% you'll have completed your first WU. The Folding process takes a lot of computing, and progress on any one machine is slow, even on the fastest of PCs . . . and there are some 180,000 active PCs all working simultaneously on this project.

This dosen't really answer the frames/steps question, but may help us understand frames better. This quote was made by the sys admin.

Are you running the console version? If so, where are you getting the frame count?
