David Letterman kinda sorta, well not really, apologises to Sarah Palin
Telegraph Blogs (U.K.) ^ | June 11, 2009 | Toby Harnden

There's been quite a stink over David Letterman's ill-judged and offensive joke about Sarah Palin's daughter getting "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. I initially took it as a reference to Bristol Palin, who is now 18 and has a young baby.

Turns out though that the daughter who did accompany Governor Palin to the Yankees was Bristol Palin, who's 14. Letterman has taken a lot of flak and few, even on the Left, have been prepared to stick up for him with any conviction.

So Dave has apologised. Kind of. Sort of. Well, hardly at all really.

He didn't mean it to refer to Willow at all, he insisted. He was talking about Bristol. So is it OK to make that joke about an 18-year-old but not a 14-year-old? Well, it's not as bad but it's still pretty grubby. My hunch is that some half-wit wrote the joke for him and Letterman himself didn't really notice - or care much - whether it was Bristol or Willow. Either one was a cipher to get at the Alaska governor.

"We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]... and now they're upset with me..." Letterman said.

"These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl.... Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No."

He then invited Palin to appear on his show. Good luck with that Dave. Oh, and he made no mention of calling Palin a "slutty flight attendant"

“Going on his show is a trap to further humiliate them and boost his ratings.”

Exactly. Remember what he did to Farrah?
She was such an easy target for him.

Any jokes the late night “comics” make about Obama is in the context of Obama being so brilliant that we peasants can’t understand him.

Letterman, in his “apology”, states “Governor Palin, if you’re watching, I would like you to consider coming to New York City, you and Todd as my guests, or leave Todd at home...”

So his “apology” essentially boils down to: it’s the Palins (and by extention, all conservatives) problem because they have no sense of humor.

Got it.

I deleted CBS from the list of stations my TV receives and notified CBS. Not only will I no longer watch Letterman, but I will no longer watch anything on CBS. This pair of seuxal “jokes” about a 14 y/o girl was way too far over the line, and Letterman and CBS have made it clear that their response will not satisfy basic human decency. [Posting on multiple threads in the hopes of reaching as many Freepers as possible and encouraging them to delete CBS too.]

Being a filthy rich faux funny guy means never having to say you're sorry.

I watched his so called apology. All he did was make a bigger a$$ of himself.

If anyone ever wanted to stay below the radar it is A-Rod.

“Dave just needs some time to grow up.”

Don’t think there’s much chance of that at this point. When he was on late night he was doing things like throwing watermelons from the roof, kind of a preteen prank .... haven’t watched him since.

A couple of years ago a local station thought “Dave’s top 10” was so “cool” that they would include it in their morning updates, they were quickly convinced that people were not interested.

CBS really hates the Palins. First Katie Couric’s hatchet job interview for which she is rewarded and most recently her lame Palin comments during her speech at Princeton. Now we have CBS Letterman sinking to a disgusting new low. There is some deep psychosis running CBS and writing for their (lack of) talent.

His so called apology doesn’t even attempt to address Willow as the injured party.

Pathetic.

The entire Palin family should go on Glenn Beck’s show to respond.

He even further insulted Willow by calling her fictional rape “promiscuous sex” on her part, that should not be condoned.

Unbelievable.

In these emails, I suggest labeling Letterman’s words as those that would normalize or even encourage pedophilia.

I hope Willow sues him. This was a malicious act against a non-public figure, and a child at that; he purposefully cast her is a negative light in a national broadcast. This is a classic textbook case of a winning case for the Palin’s.

Besides, he has DEEP pockets, and the Palin family has become well acquainted with how our judicial system works.

“Letterman needs to invite Todd Palin and have him on the show.”

No, Todd Palin needs to be the better person & give Letterman a free, guided, bear hunting trip in the deeeeeeep woods of Alaska. Perhaps the Palin girls would like to attend. I'll bet they are both excellent shots & experienced hunters.

There is one problem - scavengers may not eat the carcass!
