David Horowitz is one of those rare people who change lives. I know, because he changed mine.
When I started snapping out of my Leftist trance three years ago, I had nowhere to turn. I didn't have the foggiest idea why thugs were surrounding Obama. Weren't the progressives the good guys?
I turned to my local Borders bookstore for some answers. There I found the writings of David Horowitz, to which I could immediately relate. Like me, Horowitz was a Jew from New York who was hoodwinked by radicalism.
But that's where the similarities stopped. My parents were JFK-type liberals who loved this country. Horowitz was a red diaper baby.
Horowitz is also many years my senior. While he was a fiery radical during the '60s, I was (blessedly) too young to participate in those violent and misogynistic times. I came of age during the comparatively mellow feminist revolution.

For example, recently I got into a debate with a Harvard MBA (careful! They think that makes them sacrosanct) about the health care bill at a dinner party. (Yeah, bad place, but he started it!) He complained that his son didn't have health insurance. When I asked why, he said his son worked for a company that didn't provide it. After a few minutes of give-and-take, I discovered that he could get health insurance, but it was "expensive". (He didn't know what "expensive" meant.) I asked him if his son had a car, and he said yes. I then pointed out that what he was really telling me was that his son chose to buy a car and other things rather than health insurance.
The guy went on about how Obama fixed the problem. I asked him: "Why is it that, while your son doesn't think enough of himself to buy health insurance, you want me to buy it for him?"
He got up and left the table. Coward.

Heh. Harvard MBA and he stages a dinner table walkout rather than a rational discussion. Keep it up. The walkout is an attempt at a signal to others that your views are so beyond the pale that you are to be ignored. My view is that if you bring up a controversial subject . . . prepare to discuss . . . and pouting is bogus.

After I retired from the U.S. Army Intelligence & Security Command in 1984, I did my final year at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida - The self styled “Harvard of the South,” which I found to be as far Left as the Harvard in Massachusetts.
I did have one moment of glory there - Abbie Hoffman came on campus to give a speech. I led the college ROTC in doing to Hoffman what he did so many times to conservative speakers at colleges and we totally disrupted his speech by waving large American flags to shouts of “USA! USA! USA!”
Hoffman gave up after about half an hour and departed Winter Park, forever. It was not long after that he committed suicide by drug overdose.
Of course, the Rollins Administration went absolutely ape since the event got covered by The Orlando Sentinel, a Leftist rag, that painted us mostly ROTC demonstrators as “Right wing nut jobs” etc. The usual Leftist nonsense. As the de facto leader I was told to see one of the Deans, which I did...and I chewed his Leftist butt out in my best Army NCOese and double dog dared him to take any action against me or the Rollins cadet corps for our defense of the Republic.
The bottom line: the Rollins Administration backed down.

Glad to hear it. Another fun experience...I was walking across campus (I taught at a Big 10 school) and there were about four students with a big sign stating: Down With Capitalism. There were about 30 students listening to these four intellectually vomit the usual socialist BS. Anyway, I asked them: What are you going to replace Capitalism with? Their answer: Socialism! I asked: Which type...Marxist, Lenin, Trotsky, Mao? They looked at each other for a few seconds and said: The kind where everyone has as much as everyone else. I said: Oh, pure Communism. Please name one society that tried pure Communism that lasted more than a decade. No answer.
The good news: The rest of the crowd clearly understood that these four guys didn't have a clue what they were talking about and the crowd dispersed despite the continued chanting from the Stupid Four.
It was a fun day.
..... Speaking as one who was there, you are absolutely correct. On my little patch of ground in Boston, the intrusion of the Leftist into the hippy movement really became obvious in 68. It started with “free concerts” by left-wing performers which inevitably featured a harangue about Vietnam or the “power elite” (hysterically hypocritical from today’s point of view) or the evil Nixon or whatever “political injustice” du jour they chose to rant about. I really believe that an important book remains to be written about the organization, planning and funding of the Leftist program to coopt, destabilize and radicalize American youth and universities. There is no possible way this was a spontaneous phenomenon.
I so agree. I am slightly younger than Horowitz, and remember his writing when he was the editor for Ramparts magazine. I was on a campus infested with leftists at the time. I too, was a lefty for a while, that is, until I got a job in the private sector. (Unlike Bill Clinton).

Good one! The key to get across is the impact that Socialism (and its variants) have on economic incentives. I like the story about Thoreau and some of the socialists societies he was involved with. All day, Thoreau sits under a tree writing poetry while a counterpart is out plowing the field, sweating his brains out while staring at the East end of a West-bound horse. At the end of the day, they retire to the lodge for dinner...to share equally in the efforts of the day. How long does it take the field hand to get PO’ed at Thoreau? Indeed, it is precisely because of the disincentives that such societies (New Harmony, Owenism, etc.) create that causes them to ultimately break down and fail.
It’s actually pretty easy to defeat a lib in a debate -
just get them to define the terms they’re using (as you did with “expensive”) and get them out of the realm of generalities into the actual results and consequences of their policy (you’ll make ME pay for what he chooses not to pay for),
and they really don’t have anything to stand on.

The father then asked her if she would be willing to have grades earned that same way. Did she think that the students who didn't study and flunked tests should get an A also. Or would she be willing to give up some of her grade point average and get a C or a B so that the D and E students got C's and B's also.
She wasn't so willing to do that because she studied hard and gave up social events to get good grades and he said, well that's exactly what you are expecting good workers to do with their hard earned money.
Then she saw the light.
