South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley isn't retreating from her decision to keep the Confederate flag atop the north end of the Statehouse in Columbia despite complaints from the NAACP, whose president this week said the ethnic minority governor is a "contradiction" for allowing the flag to fly.
Speaking to a crowd at an NAACP national conference in Los Angeles on Monday, NAACP President Benjamin Jealous attempted to shame Haley into removing the flag by comparing African American slavery to oppression Haley's ancestors in India faced under British rule.
"Perhaps one of the most perplexing examples of the contradictions of this moment in history is that Nikki Haley, South Carolina's first governor of color, continues to fly the Confederate flag in front of her state's capitol. Given the similarities between our struggles to end slavery and segregation, and her ancestors' struggle to end British colonialism and oppression in India, my question to Governor Haley is one that Dr. King often asked himself: 'What would Gandhi do?'" Jealous said.
The flag has been at the north end of the Statehouse since 2000. It was moved there after legislation passed in response to protests and an NAACP boycott of the state over the flag's position atop the dome of the Statehouse, where it was placed in 1962 by an all-white South Carolina Legislature.
Haley was born in South Carolina, and her spokesman said the decision lies with the people of the Palmetto State.
"More than a decade ago, under the leadership of a Democratic governor, South Carolinians Republican and Democrat, black and white, came to a compromise position on the Confederate flag," said Haley press secretary, Rob Godfrey.
"Many people were uncomfortable with that compromise, but it addressed a sensitive subject in a way that South Carolina as a whole could accept.

I suggest that the NAACP urge every black person to put confederate flag decals on their cars and work toward minimizing the impact of the social implications of something that will never be removed from our history.
NAACP, always on the lookout for the next thing to be outraged by instead of actually improving peoples lives.
She should say “we will take down the Confederate flag when 50% of Blacks vote Republican.
Good on ya, Gov. Haley! The Constitution does NOT guarantee a right not to be put in a snit at the slightest perceived offense.

You’ve got that right, Darksheare. Mr. Benjamin Jealous should be more concerned about 50% Black teen unemployment and 60% of abortions are performed on Black females.
Put it back in the deck already!

Teachers cheating to give them good scores.
Just a short list of what the NAACP should be working on, Instead they are still crying about a 160 year old flag and electing thieves and tax cheats like Charlie Rangel , Maxine Waters and idiots like Sheila Jackson Lee and Eddie Bernice Johnson, and Bracko Hussein Obama, alias Barry Soetoro.

POST OF THE DAY.
That the first civil war was started over slavery is one of the biggest lies ever promoted. If Slavery was the issue all the confederate states needed to do was stay in the union and block any move to amend the Constitution to eliminate slavery.
Back then there were not enough Union states to meet the 2/3 requirement to amend the Constitution. So If slavery was the issue the confederate states would have preserved it much better by remaining in the Union and not seceding.

Given some of the recent revelations, “munch a rug” might be a better guess...
They need to be declared a Terrorist organization, there is no other porpoise for their existence.
IIRC, a majority consisting of three-fourths of state legislatures is required to ratify an amendment to the Constitution. This of course further reinforces your argument that abolition of slavery could have easily been thwarted by the slaveholding states remaining in the Union and blocking abolitionist legislation in the Congress, making war unneccessary IF that were the sole issue.
Anyway, the Confederate flag flying just behind the Confederate Soldier memorial is only a few blocks from where I live, and believe me it’s a lot more in-your-face to its opponents than if it had been left on the State House dome, high and distant from normal view. Careful what you wish for.
The NAACP huffs and puffs but I think that’s what they enjoy doing most. After 2000 they moved the goal posts and announced the boycott would continue. I remember in 2008 how the Obama campaign took pains to announce that BHO would be staying only in PRIVATE HOMES in the Palmetto State in order to respect the boycott.
One state senator who is black observed that the only result of the NAACP boycott has been to make South Carolina’s beaches the whitest on the East Coast.
