It is time. My opus
Self | 1-28-2013 | melas

While the title says it all, I thought a goodbye was in order.

While I've been a FReeper for well over a decade, I must declare that it is time to part ways. While I have the greatest respect for a great many of you, the days where I can in good conscience remain silent about the issues that set me apart from the rest of FReeperdom have past. For clarity, or perhaps catharsis, I'm not entirely certain which, I'll lay them out on the table an call the ZOT™ down upon myself.

The racism: I just can't handle it anymore. FR has become increasingly racist since President Obama took office, and enforcement has dropped. Now, not a single crime can be reported with an "amish" comment, and I've yet to see a post express embarrassment or shame when lo and behold sometimes the perpetrators turned out to be lily white.

Homosexuality: FR is on the wrong side of history on this one, and I'll just leave it at that.

Mostly though, it's the hate. More and more posts reference violent solutions to political disagreements. Some subtly couched, others make no pretense. I wouldn't be surprised at all if I read in the morning paper that a FReeper murdered a federal bureaucrat or a federal judge.

I've learned so much, from so many of you, and for that I'm grateful. I genuinely and truly wish all of you well, and sincerely hope you all live out the rest of your lives in happiness.

Melas

I think the dang coyote got my rabbit. I don't see any rabbit tracks in the dusting of snow we got night before last. The coyotes have been yipping around out in my yard several times in the last week. I go out with a pistol (just in case), a flashlight and a walking staff and harass them when they do. It's basically a game but I don't want them to get too comfortable around here.

The rabbit lived in my woodpile and wasn't the least bit afraid of me. Ah, well, seems to be the cycle every year. Two or three baby rabbits in the spring and scarcely one to be found by mid-winter. I think hawks are usually the beneficiaries of the new rabbit crop though.

We have. And you've surrendered by declaring repetitively "It's over."

You agree with these statements?

“Homosexuality: FR is on the wrong side of history on this one, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised at all if I read in the morning paper that a FReeper murdered a federal bureaucrat or a federal judge. “

You’re either intentionally being a dumbass, or just outright stupid. I didn’t make the comments you quoted back to me and you damn well should know better than to attribute quotes incorrectly.

Now go opus yourself with your friend and do this forum a favor.

Had a coyote after the outdoor cat one fine night.
It knows that my presence means something very bad.
However, it thinks that if I am not within sight that all is safe.

It thought wrong.

Still, my bunnies here have suffered over the years.
Have one that likes to wiggle his ears while hopping in circles around me.
I ask it, “You’re certain you’re a wild eastern cottontail?”
That earns me a foot thump and stern glare.
Hysterical actually.
Not only do they have to worry about the coyote, they have the hawks and owls to be worried about.
And my lovebird seems to have a knack for ticking off the local owl and getting him to sit outside the window.
Waiting for the night I head out and end up wearing an owl on my head because of my evil little bird.

LMAO

In the interest of being helpful to all I'll have to surf over to Google Maps and work up a graphic for them. ;^)

Too many houses nearby to take a shot at a coyote here. I wouldn't kill one anyway unless it attacked me but I would take some shots to put some fear in them if that wouldn't likely result in a couple of Sheriff's cars coming to find out what's going on.

My rabbits are cottontails too. When I startle my most recent bunny friend (by not noticing that it's there and walking up to it too fast) it gives me a look like "what's your problem?" What can I say? They blend in very well.

They do give you some sizzling withering looks when you disturb them, don’t they?
I’m told that it is even worse when they are tamed, they get the imperious attitude that cats have.

The coyote here are protected by law as well.
Seems the opportunistic scavenging pest has good friends in Albany.
So much so that when we had a rash of coyote attacking children, the pols and enviro groups set about demonizing humans instead of going, “Hey, there’s a problem with this critter here.”
You need a nuisance animal license and a predator license to smack one down if it is a bother.
And even then you might run into trouble.

I know you didn’t say that. I merely included you as a courtesy ping because I was replying to a post that had been directed to you.

It’s unincorporated here so technically it’s not illegal to discharge a firearm. With houses situated in every conceivable line of fire, other than a few feet in front of you towards the ground, they might bring up something like reckless endangerment. Frankly if I heard gunshots around here at 0-dark thirty I would be alarmed too. But a good reason for it is all it would take to satisfy me.

My neighbors here don’t have an issue with it much.
They were grateful when I vaporized a possum that had been causing a problem.
However, if he sound of said shot goes too far, there are people in the area who would have a problem with it.
So I’m restricted to specific areas and angles as well as calibers.

NOBODY had anything of substance to say. If you disagree, cite an example.

I suppose I could put an illegal silencer on a 9mm instead of taking a .357 or a .12 ga out with me and neutralize the 'scare the poop out of the neighbors' factor. lol

But it's a moot point. By the time I get outside the coyotes have scattered and found cover. They're not stupid. They know just how far they can push the envelope. I take the pistol in case I run into one whose brains are scrambled by rabies. Very small odds of that I think.
