Wrong Again: 50 Years of Failed Eco-pocalyptic Predictions
Competitive Enterprise Institute ^ | 9/24/21 | Myron Ebel

Thanks go to Tony Heller, who first collected many of these news clips and posted them on RealClimateScience.

SUMMARY

Modern doomsayers have been predicting climate and environmental disaster since the 1960s. They continue to do so today.

None of the apocalyptic predictions with due dates as of today have come true.

What follows is a collection of notably wild predictions from notable people in government and science.

More than merely spotlighting the failed predictions, this collection shows that the makers of failed apocalyptic predictions often are individuals holding respected positions in government and science.

While such predictions have been and continue to be enthusiastically reported by a media eager for sensational headlines, the failures are typically not revisited.

1967: ‘Dire famine by 1975.’

induced by isostatic rebound rather than global warming

Abstract

Methane seepage from the upper continental slopes of Western Svalbard has previously been attributed to gas hydrate dissociation induced by anthropogenic warming of ambient bottom waters.

Here we show that sediment cores drilled off Prins Karls Foreland contain freshwater from dissociating hydrates. However, our modeling indicates that the observed pore water freshening began around 8 ka BP when the rate of isostatic uplift outpaced eustatic sea-level rise. The resultant local shallowing and lowering of hydrostatic pressure forced gas hydrate dissociation and dissolved chloride depletions consistent with our geochemical analysis.

Hence, we propose that hydrate dissociation was triggered by postglacial isostatic rebound rather than anthropogenic warming. Furthermore, we show that methane fluxes from dissociating hydrates were considerably smaller than present methane seepage rates implying that gas hydrates were not a major source of methane to the oceans, but rather acted as a dynamic seal, regulating methane release from deep geological reservoirs.

Snapshots of the sensationalist enviro apocalyptic articles at link. Acid rain, ozone depletion, global cooling, impending new ice age. Wow, brings back some fond memories.🙄😝 Another one I recently heard, At least 2/3 of Florida will be submerged one of these days. I suppose we should pack up and leave to avoid the rush😀😝😝

Just go to https://realclimatescience.com/

He has stats, warnings, science and newspaper articles that go way back well over a hundred years.

There are lots of sites like it, but reading a few articles there (and/or watching some of his youtube videos, will cure you of any thoughts that man is negatively affecting the climate in any way that actually matters - at least regarding CO2.

These failed predictions won’t deter the Climate Change weenies in the least. They’ll just say the dire events didn’t occur because of the small improvements we’ve already made. We’ve just got to keep it up!

(I’ve read articles by Climate Change weenies where they’ve said just that.)

The only thing all of these predictions have in common is a call to increase taxes to fight the inevitable doom, which has never worked.
Perhaps the answer is to reduce government and taxation.

Too much to read, but the stats are helpful. All that's needed is a list I've provided many times on this site:
1. World famine due to over-population;
2. Ozone depletion;
3. Oil depletion;
4. New Ice Age;
5. Bubonic Plaque Re-appearance;
6. Tylenol is the new Aspirin;
7. Wolves are becoming Extinct;
8 Spotted Owls are going Extinct;
9. Eagles Will Not Exist Anymore;
10. No more whales or dolphins;
11. Nature vs Nurture regarding children;
12. Alcar hysteria - Don't eat Apples;
13. The Fedgov Food Pyramid;
14. Little unknown lizard needs water more than Farmers;
15. Just moments in the sun causes skin cancer and cataracts;

I know I'm missing some major predictions that didn't come true. Need more coffee. Oh yeah, coffee can kill you.

Ozone depletion was something we were supposed to have fixed. So it could be that it actually would have happened if we hadn’t taken steps against it. I don’t know the details, though.

I remember all of these predictions. I have shared them with younger folk who just laugh and say it isn’t so because they can’t find it on the internet...their source for everything.

All of our history is, has or will be scrubbed. Once us oldsters are gone, who will truly know what happened?

I have been muttering in my drink about a problem (out of many) I have with this current world; “EXPERT FATIGUE”! This compilation of articles shows me that this problem has been developing for much of my life!

I regard this problem as an unfortunate but natural development of a string of successes (ironic)! We have had a ‘Golden Age’ of experts and scientists, from Pasteur to Edison to Salk etc. . We had disease and death rates drop to undreamed levels while living conditions like A/C, plentiful food, ‘entertainment at a switch’ became common! Thus it became easy to trust the White Coat / Ph.D. when pronouncements (oracles) are made!

Add to this a media, eager to break a story but all too lacking in true understanding. On top of this, politicians who feel an active need to present problems that they have ‘solutions’ for {how progressive)! Thus we find ‘experts’ and they find political support that feed them money for more studies and that becomes a self-sustaining operation!

Let us get off of this ‘merry-go-round’!

Once I went back into the history pages of the Wikipedia “Earth Day” entry. Go back far enough, and Ira Einhorn will gradually re-appear.

Ol’ Ira was big on stocking his freezer, and he is a free man now thanks to his good pal Arlen Specter.

Ira Einhorn

Ira WHO? He has become a “non-person” on Earth Day web sites. Scrubbed. “HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED!”

Older people will remember him as the original founder of Earth Day.

Didn’t you hear? The ozone hole is back. Coincidentally, the patents will be running out soon on the HCFCs that replaced CFCs when their patents ran out.

The ozone hole over the South Pole is now bigger than Antarctica

Seems like you can predict climate catastrophes by tracking patent expirations.

I’ll bet if we eliminate patent expiration we could fix the climate.

Amazing!
