William Shatner Explains Why Being the Face of Halloween's Michael Myers Doesn't Earn Him Anything

William Shatner playing the role of Michael Myers is not something you will find on the actor's resume, but in a way, the Star Trek legend has been playing the Haddonfield killer since his first appearance back in 1978’s Halloween. As everyone knows by now, the mask used by Michael in the franchise, which has become so synonymous with the character that it has never changed across many sequels and reboots, was originally just a regular Captain Kirk mask from a costume shop, but does the likeness to Shatner mean he is in line for any royalties from the horror saga? The simple answer is no.

Shatner from everything I have ever read was a pretty stand up guy who worked and still works very hard all of his life.

If I were him I would not have even considered trying to get money from this.

If some lawyer told me I should, I would say “Get thee behind me shyster”

I'm not sure that is actually true.   Where would they get a mask of William Shatner.

The back of “Starlog” magazine? That’s where I got mine.

"I'm not sure that is actually true. Where would they get a mask of William Shatner."

Read the article:

"The mask was originally made from a mold of Shatner's face for the Star Trek makeup department to apply appliances and alter his appearance. It was later found and used for the Halloween movie by the director."

Apparently, the mask disappeared after the cancellation of Star Trek and somehow ended up in a Halloween costume shop

Basically because you can’t get compensated for satire.
I can satarize every Dismey movie and there isn’t a thing that Disney can do about it and Disney is one the most litigious of companies.

It was a custom mask of his face that the make up crew used to create and practice “looks” for various episodes. After Star Trek was canceled it ended up in a costume shop and eventually became Michael Meyer’s mask.

Interesting trivia.

Shatner understands that anything that keeps his name out there is good. No such thing as bad publicity.

The mask was on a mission to boldly go where no mask had gone before.

"Never knew this."

I never knew it either until I watched a Horror documentary series, and they talked about how they went out to a store, and bought a William Shatner mask, brought it back, and painted it several times until they got the look they wanted.

Do you recall if it was THE original mask, or a replica made from the original?

No, sorry I don't, but I just did a search and found this article from 2020. There's a video that tells the story about getting the mask and turning it into the mask for Michael Myers. It's a little over 7 minutes. I'm going to watch it right now.

Also from the same search, I found a NY Times article, but it's behind a paywall.

‘Halloween’ at 40: Their ‘Horrible Idea’ Became a Horror Classic

This is the first paragraph that I could grab via cut and paste:

Oct 11, 2018 · The production designer Tommy Lee Wallace went to Bert Wheeler’s magic shop on Hollywood Boulevard to buy a mask for Michael. He came back with two: a clown mask and one of William Shatner as ...

That's the story I heard in the documentary series. Tommy Lee Wallace is in the earlier video I posted the link to.
