Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.

Our FreeRepublic team of 300+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 144th place (with 1,045 CPUs - 24,200 completed Work Units and nearly 4,000,000 points)

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

Folding@Home FAQ for new users:

What is Folding@Home?
A Stanford University project to find out how proteins fold.

Why it's important: Proteins folding wrong causes all kinds of diseases, like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and forms of cancer. Folding@Home uses novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. Through Folding@home, scientists now have the horsepower to study the mechanics of protein folding. With its ability to share the workload among hundred of thousands of computers economically, Folding@home can help scientists understand how proteins snap, or don’t, into their predestined shapes — and may help to explain the origins of diseases such as Alzheimer’s and apparently unrelated diseases. We're fueling research that could end all that.

How does it work?: You download a safe, tested program (see link below) that is certified by Stanford University. It gets work from Stanford, runs calculations using your spare computer power, and sends the results back to the University.

Is it safe? Yes! Folding@Home rarely effects computer performance in any way and won't compromise your privacy in any way. It only uses the computing power you aren't using so it doesn't slow down other programs.

How do I get started folding for Team FreeRepublic?: 1.)Download the folding program from Stanford University's folding download page (see link below). Type in your desired username. 2) Type in 36120 for the team number. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - if you get the number wrong, you won't be folding for team FreeRepublic! 3) The third question asks, "Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service?" - We recommend you answer YES. Otherwise you will have to manually start the program after every reboot.

How can my computer help? Even if he were given exclusive access to all of the world’s supercomputers, Standford still wouldn’t have as much processing power as they get from the supercluster of people’s desktop systems Folding@home relies on. Modern supercomputers are essentially a cluster of hundreds of processors linked by fast networking. But Stanford needed the power of hundreds of thousands of processors, not just hundreds.

There's no reason to not get involved! It's free, easy, and you can know you're helping every minute without lifting a finger.

Whoo hoooo! I finally broke the 220 barrier. It's worth Folding if only to confound the DUmmies! (Oh, yeah, benefits to science and medicine are nice, too!)

I think I'll total over 10,000 points in the next week. I have 600 coming in tomorrow evening alone.

Hi!

I'm at 19,400 of 20,000 on my current work, which should be done by tomorrow.

Big bump!

Thanks! I KNOW why I got behind...I've got three Linux workstations here running the client and had them all running FULL time. I started turning one off at night now and then.

Ya know...believe this or not...I've got about five Sun Enterprise class machines at work that are NOT being used for ANYTHING. We pulled them from service not long ago and replaced then with IBM (x86) servers running Linux.

But I discovered a month ago that at least some of the Sun hardware runs the Sparc 64 port of Debian Linux. :-)

If it would run the client, that would be cool. :-) Although, I'm pretty sure my wife isn't going to tolerate many more "wind sucking machines" (...or...as my FR friend subatomicdust calls them...WSMs).

I'll see if they'll work though...that would be cool. A stack of Sun Enterprise hardware dedicated to running folding clients. :-)

I needed a break from what I was working on...so here's a screenshot of the three machines I have here running the folding client. Only one xterm is from the machine I'm using as a workstation now. The other two are down the hallway a little. :-)

Folding NERD!

I JUST noticed....it's QUITTING time! :-)

We won't pass any teams today but we will pass 3 teams tomorrow. We pass 3 more the next day and then 3 more in the next 2 days. Then 3 more teams the next day.

It's nice when we hit these "clusters".

A little shameless self-promotion here:

If you'd like to be able to track multiple folding PCs via the web, and be able to tell when individual PCs stop folding for one reason or another, I've devised a system to do this.

I won't post the link here for obvious reasons, but Freepmail me if you're interested.

I've only got ONE machine here at home worth a hoot. It's reasonably "beefy". The other three are anything from AMD-K6 400MHZ to P-III 800MHZ. It's all in a "heap" on a rollable rack and has been christened the "WSMs"....Wind Sucking Machines.

I'm still thinking about those Sun Enterprise class machines over at work though...heh..heh... talking about an "UNFAIR" advantage! I'll find out tomorrow or Friday if they'll run the client in Linux. :-)

OK, soccer_maniac - I'm sitting at 365 points so far for today, and I have a 404 pt WU scheduled to finish real soon, so I should push over 760 points in this 24 hour period and suddenly appear high up on your list you just posted... Be sure to post it here when I do, since I'll drop like a stone and have another day with 0 points tomorrow. (my chart looks like a pogo stick for the last couple of weeks!)

Well, I lost two machines in Sundays storms (middle TN). I've got one almost ready to come back online, but the other one may be toast. It was my slowest machine, so I may not rebuild it right away. The Budget Director in the kitchen is failing to see the logic in building another AMD X2 machine, but I'm going to refine my presentation and keep trying. Meanwhile, alas, my ascent is to be slowed somewhat.

Hi Egon - thanks for the Linux PHP script. Still have'nt figured out how to run it, so I've given up for now - maybe try again when I have more time.

I did find out that I have several different installs of PHP, but I don't have the libcurl installed. I posted some questions to the Mepis (my version of Linux) website & they were pretty helpful in learning more about Mepis and the packages installed. Here's a link, if you're interested:
http://www.mepis.org/node/9511

Anyway, thanks for your efforts. I like seeing how some of our other team members are doing and how many CPUs they have.

Same over here - rain Bay Area CA - lost my buddies systems (he's in Poland) limped back online for a while today - then more rain.

My brave little 667 PowerBook finally completed 11 days of crunching only to get another 11 day assignment.

I actually made the top 20 for a day before everything went south.

Well - back to folding - when things settle down I'm going to do egon's thing!

Hi Egon - thanks for the Linux PHP script. Still have'nt figured out how to run it, so I've given up for now - maybe try again when I have more time.

Sorry I can't be of more help. Still a beginner at this Linux stuff. I'll be watching that thread to see what they come up with, and incorporate it into the help page wherever possible.

I know that the PHP interpreter we're using is able to be invoked just by running the script at the command line. I suspect that the magic is in the first line of the script, which tells the shell where to find the interpreter for the script.

Once you're able to successfully run the script from the command-line, that's where cron comes in. You'll basically create a crontab that will automatically kick off the script on a regular schedule. I've almost got enough information to write that section of the help file now.

As the installation of PHP seems to vary between the flavors of Linux and the installers available (sounds like you're using Synaptec, whereas I use Aptitude) and the availability of different PHP interpreters, I'm not sure I can successfully integrate that into help.

I've figured out that curl and libcurl components are the mechanisms by which the information is actually transmitted via HTTP.

Someone in that thread mentioned the option of creating a shell script to accomplish the same functionality. Not sure that would work. While a shell script could possibly grep the information out of the unitinfo.txt file, I don't think it has the sophistication to wrap the info in XML, let alone send it via HTTP.

"...cron...crontab,,,Synaptec...Aptitude...PHP interpreters...curl and libcurl...HTTP...grep...XML..."

There you go speaking Greek, again. LOL   Man, I don't know about all that new fangled stuff - guess I'll just have to find an old Fortran or Cobal compiler & write something to make it work. (just kidding, as if I really could, LOL)

I do have Synaptic, but I think my main problem is that I don't have curl & libcurl installed.  I think I'll wait for your updated help file before I try tackling it again.   Thanks for all your hard work.

BTW - seeing the points on the FAHUpload page was really neat.  Congrats & thanks for getting that on there.
