The Extraordinary Nazca Prehistoric Balloon
Airship dot com (this domain for sale) ^ | before Nov 2004 | Julian Nott and Jim Woodman

Julian Nott and Jim Woodman tested their theory that manned smoke balloons of cotton and reed not only controlled these designs but may also have been used for ceremonial/religious festivals in which important members of the society who had died were transported on a ritualistic journey to the sun, the god they worshipped... "To our surprise," says Nott, "the quality of the smoke was crucial. Modern historians--laughing at the Montgolfiers, who believed that what was being burned to heat the balloon was important--claim that all that mattered was the heat. However, this balloon showed that it is essential to have smoke fill the pores in the weave."

I guess it makes sense -- one's Woodman, the other's Nott.

The aerial view is not necessary to construction of the Nazca figures any more than it is to crop circles. But, winged serpents don't need smoke balloons to view the figures so much as they need a dictionary to interpret them.

After downloading Google Earth, I took a look at the Nazca area and was amazed at the number of "lines".

They're everywhere.

This lot must have been there before 'something' tore away the mountainside...

wow. I've been there. I've seen the fabric. The fabric of these people was to me as amazing as the lines and now they seem to be tied together. wowow thanks.

Woodman and Nott? I just noticed. Are they kidding?

[Enter RIMMER, WARDEN KNOT] [Leading the Warden, RIMMER now wears KNOT's grey jacket over his Canary bib and a hopeful, nervous smile on his face]

CASSANDRA Hello Arnold, bang on time.
RIMMER I've brought you a visitor, Cassandra. Do you know his name?
CASSANDRA Yes, I do. Not - [Shock registers on RIMMER's face]
RIMMER What? CASSANDRA Not - RIMMER 'Knot'??
CASSANDRA Let me finish! Not that it matters what his name is, I mean, our relationship doesn't last very long. [RIMMER calms himself, visibly trying to relax]
KNOT I understand you have the ability to predict -
CASSANDRA - the future, yes, I do.
KNOT A hundred percent reli -
CASSANDRA - able, yes.
KNOT What happens to me; do I get back to Earth?
CASSANDRA No, you die in about four seconds' time of a heart attack after hearing the news that you're going to die of a heart attack.

KNOT You filthy ly -- Ack! [KNOT clutches a hand to his chest and stares at RIMMER in shock. RIMMER watches nonchalantly as KNOT sinks to the floor and sprawls on his back. CASSANDRA peers down at him sympathetically]

CASSANDRA Poor Rimmer.
RIMMER Yes, poor old 'Rimmer'. [KNOT raises a hand weakly]
KNOT My name is not - [Quick to obfuscate the man's inconvenient last words, RIMMER leans down as if to listen intently]
RIMMER Your name is not *what*?
KNOT Knot! Not... Knot..! [The man's lead lolls back slackly. RIMMER looks to CASSANDRA impatiently]
RIMMER Is he dead now?
CASSANDRA I'm afraid so.
RIMMER Yes! [Enormously pleased, RIMMER holds up both fists triumphantly] CASSANDRA He died of a massive coronary, just as I prophesied. RIMMER Yes! [RIMMER punches the air again]

CASSANDRA You seem inordinately happy, Arnold, but why? You're going to die too.

has google improved resolution of the nazca area? i looked a few months ago and you could make out the largest lines but not much else.

hopefully they plan to do improved detail of archeologically interesting areas; the path of hadrians wall would be interesting for all the crop-marks you could make out of the unexcavated forts, for example. The nazca lines are an obvious one too.

the nazca lines are one of the single most puzzling man-made monuments ever to me, as far as motivation goes. Practically any religious contruction of that magnitude is dual-use, i.e. while dedicated to god xyz, it is intended to either be used by mortals or be viewable as a symbol of power, majesty, etc. The nazca lines do not fit this category.

That was smeggin naughty of you.

Not that I cared one way or the other about Knot, but Nott is not a Woodman; and Listy never gets a nod in that scene, so I fail to see the relative merits of any demerits awarded for not solving the knotty Casandra Problem sooner.

Beside...and Rimmer got all the good lines, leaving very little left over for Nazca.
