"The only modern way to describe a World War I dogfight is to imagine a knife fight in a phone booth," says Tony Bill, who directed "Flyboys," which MGM is releasing today. The film tells the tale of the Lafayette Escadrille, a squadron of American pilots who volunteered to fight for France in the early days of World War I.

Dogfight from "Flyboys" -- takes war movie CGI to next level
ping!
Saw it tonight. Fun movie.
I think I'll go see it this afternoon.
My Dad, a WW II vet who trained with the Army Air Force as an aviation cadet, would have loved this film. He liked "Memphis Belle", the film about WW II flyers.
This looks to be one of those films that you MUST see on the big screen. Like "Gladiator", the magic of the opening battle in the forest was totally downsized and lost on DVD.
Thanks for the review. I plan to see it soon.
Not strictly a military history topic but might be interesting to those of us who are interested in WW1 air battles.
Thanks, SunkenCiv, for the ping.
Looks like the story might be OK, but if I want a video game, I'll buy one I can interact with.
It worked with Star wars because we didn't have any idea what a star war would look like (hint; no great big fiery explosions) ... I'm not in a hurry to pay to see this one.

This film is getting some good publicity in the weekly newstand mags (photos, short write-ups).
I think it is, saw it last Saturday and will be going to see it again on the big screen. A really good flick. Michael Medved raved about it last Friday on his radio show. The Detroit News movie reviewer bad mouthed it. Of course, he is a past winner of the distinguished Joseph Goebbels propaganda award. My criteria is if he likes it it isn't worth the time and money.
ping.
Read this article in the WSJ - guess I thought it was interesting because the movie "Aviator" starts off with Hughes filming "Hells Angels" which is a direct tie-in to this article. It was interesting to find out that very few movies have been made on this topic.
I assume (but don't know) that the Hells Angels bikers took their name from the Hughes movie (which may have gotten it's name from real life)?
FWIW, the Wikipedia article says that's true.
Interesting, thanks.
This film is on my viewing schedule.
