Archeologists find vast ancient city in Afghanistan

Centuries-old shards of pottery mingle with spent ammunition rounds on a wind-swept mountainside in northern Afghanistan where French archeologists believe they have found a vast ancient city.

For years, villagers have dug the baked earth on the heights of Cheshme-Shafa for pottery and coins to sell to antique smugglers.

... before Islam, that is. Hard to imagine, but Afghanistan was once a peaceful, thriving Buddhist kingdom. Now there's nothing but dust, dung, and flies.

Balkh was called “the Mother of Cities” by the Moslems; Michael Wood used aerial footage of the site when he made his “In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great”.
