The Shattered Crown: The Aleppo Codex, 60 Years After the Riots
Biblical Archaeology Review ^ | Sep/Oct 2008 | Yosef Ofer

On November 29, 1947, the very day that Hebrew University Professor E.L. Sukenik acquired the first three Dead Sea Scrolls and brought them back to Jerusalem, the United Nations passed by a two -thirds vote the resolution partitioning Palestine, effectively creating a Jewish state for the first time in two millennia. To Sukenik, it was almost as if the apocalypse had arrived: A 2,000-year-old Isaiah scroll -- which prophesied the return of Israel -- surfaced virtually on the same day that Jewish sovereignty was reestablished in the Holy Land.

But within two days of that glorious day in Jewish history, disaster struck. In response to the partition vote, anti-Jewish riots broke out in Aleppo, Syria, and elsewhere in the Arab world. The Aleppo synagogues were stormed and their Torah scrolls set ablaze. The worst-case scenario was realized: The Aleppo Codex, the cherished 1,000-year-old manuscript known as "the Crown," was trashed. Rioters rushed into the Great Synagogue and broke into the locked iron chest where the codex was kept. Precisely what the mob did with it is uncertain; no Jew witnessed it. Fearing for their lives, the Jewish population had barricaded themselves in their homes. The first person to enter the synagogue after the riots was the caretaker (shamash), Shaul Baghdadi. Baghdadi's son Asher recalled going in and finding his father: "I remember everything. I saw my father weeping like a child ... My father sat. And I went through the papers, the piles, to find the pieces of the codex."

Encouraged by Syrian soldiers -- who had been dispatched to protect the complex -- rioters entered the synagogue, hurled 40 Torah scrolls into the courtyard, drenched them in kerosene and set them, and thousands of other sacred items, aflame. Rioters also attacked the synagogue's prized possession, the Aleppo Codex, tearing out pages, tossing the ancient manuscript to the ground and possibly burning parts of it.

Imagine the outrage if somebody had done that to just a bookstore copy of the Quran.

Feuer und wasser = fire and water

I was pleased with what they used for water.

And the bacon was a nice touch.

But notice that they would not allow the participants to be seen.

I don’t blame them.

The Second Coming of Christ will occur before the generation passes of those who saw Isreal become a State.

According to the “root cause” theory of social justice, we (non islamos) owe the islamo world a random number of destroyed mosques for every church or synagogue touched, harmed, criticized and/or destroyed or damaged by islamos.

The interest on that debt could, reasonably, be large enough to include every islamo place of worship on the planet.

http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/History/jewref.html

On May 16, 1948, a New York Times Headline read “Jews in Grave Danger in all Muslim Lands: Nine Hundred Thousand in Africa and Asia face wrath of their foes.“ The story reported of a law drafted by the Arab League Political Committee “which was intended to govern the legal status of Jewish residents of Arab League countries. Their bank accounts would be frozen and used to finance resistance to ‘Zionist ambitions in Palestine.’ Jews believed to be active Zionists would be interned and their assets confiscated.“ Pogroms and persecutions, and grave fears for their future, regularly preceded the mass expulsions and exoduses of the Jews, whose ancestors had inhabited these regions from time immemorial. Beginning in 1948, more than 650,000 Jews left their homes in the Arab world to become refugees, and were eventually integrated into Israel, even as the country was being threatened with annihilation by neighboring Arab League states. Since their belongings were confiscated as the price of leaving from their repressive homelands, they arrived in Israel penniless, but they were welcomed and quickly absorbed into Israeli society. Approximately 300,000 more Jews found refuge, and a new homeland, in Europe and the Americas.

The mass displacement of the Jews from Arab countries has been a breach of international law. The 1945 Nuremberg Charter made wartime mass deportation a crime against humanity, and the 1949 Geneva Convention Relative to the Treatment of Civilians in Time of War also prohibits deportations and forcible transfers, whether mass or individual. Decrees and practices discriminating against Jews in Arab countries, especially denationalization, is eerily similar to the Nazi Nuremberg Laws on Citizenship and Race, and the victims are the same, the Jews.

Roughly half of Israel’s 5 million Jews are Jewish refugees from Arab countries or their descendants, and they received no humanitarian aid from the United Nations. To this day, the Arab states have refused to pay any compensation to the hundreds of thousands of Jews who were forced to abandon their property before fleeing their homelands. Israel has consequently maintained that any agreement to compensate the Palestinian refugees must also include Arab compensation for Jewish refugees.
